Untitled[edit]

Dear anonymous friend, why did you decide to include (Talán eltűnök hirtelen...) (without discussing the idea on this talk page)? First, it is not one of the most well-known poems of Attila József (well, it depends on what the definition of well-known you think is). And this is a very-very poor translation. For example:

"It was decided when was I / A child that I’d have to die like this / Sorrow torture my brain when I / Remember my careless, mad actions"

It is evident that it has nothing to do with the original text: "Már bimbós gyermek-testemet / szem-maró füstön száritottam. / Bánat szedi szét eszemet, / ha megtudom, mire jutottam."

If you cannot explain the choice, I will delete this section. Lelkesa 10:58, 30 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I deleted this poem. However, I suppose including one of his best poems would be a good idea. But we'll need to find a poem that has a good English translation. Lelkesa 15:37, 30 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

And so I've found my native country,
that soil the gravedigger will frame,
where they who write the words above me
do not for once misspell my name.

I made some change about his illness. Szokri 22:26, 16 September 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Bonsoir
I discovered Attila József through a song of Dick Annegarn, a belgian singer and poet.
I was wondering if there was today any french or english translations of his poems ?
Thanks for reply

Hello, I am planning/hoping to expand the page a bit. I wrote my BA thesis on the English translations a JA's poetry, and as a result have some knowledge on accessible English sources about him, and his work. Some translations are also missing, Bátki has published a total of three collection over the years, two are similar ('97 and 2010) while the third (c. '87) is different. Thomas Kabdebo's tranlations are also missing, as is the small book of translations by René Bonnerjea (albeit the copy of the latter in the National Széchényi Library may be the last extant print). Are there any objections to me adding these translations and a few English sources on his work, while augmenting the page in general? (Seagerd (talk) 15:03, 24 January 2016 (UTC))[reply]

Possible unreliable source used on this page in several places[edit]

Attila József - Jozsef Attila at www.kirjasto.sci.fi

The above website appears to not meet the requirements of being a reliable source since it is self published. There is a discussion [here]. There is also a discussion at the [plagiarism talk page] about how to handle this issue.-Crunchy Numbers (talk) 03:40, 21 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

What is going on here? I tried tidying up the Karolyi Foundation note but got an error message: the Hungarian version comes out all wrong in display.--Felix Folio Secundus (talk) 01:11, 27 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Poem (Ime, hát megleltem hazámat)[edit]

I have changed the translated stanza of the poem Ime, hát megleltem hazámat from the Zsuzsanna Osváth & Frederick Turner one to the Edwin Morgan one because I feel it is closer in sense to the original, especially in the fourth line – albeit that it does embellish a little in the third line with "guard". If anyone disagrees, feel free to change it back, but please leave a comment here justifying yourself. I have also included a third translation by Vernon Watkins, and the original:

Original Morgan Osváth & Turner Watkins
Ime, hát megleltem hazámat,
a földet, ahol nevemet
hibátlanul irják fölébem,
ha eltemet, ki eltemet.
Well, in the end I have found my home,
the land where flawless chiselled letters
guard my name above the grave
where I'm buried, if I have buriers.
And so I've found my native country,
that soil the gravedigger will frame,
where they who write the words above me
do not for once misspell my name.
Behold, I have found my land, the country
Where my name’s cut without a fault
By him who is to bury me,
If he was bred to dig my vault.
