Vista

I'd like to add some information about AutoPlay under Vista as the configuration behaviour is quite different from that under XP. However I do not know what effect the the tick box in the dialog has: "Use AutoPlay for all media and devices". Does that set NoDriveTypeAutoRun or what? I can't find any references and I can't just make up stuff. I don't use Vista... I'll add some text on the main page anyway, but if anyone has some decent info, post it below here... Thanks. The Use AutoPlay for all media and devices sets something that isn't AutoRun related. Need a reference although I could wing it if someone ran regmon on Vista and toggled the option.

Note addition of IDynamicHWHandler in Vista. I wish Microsoft would document everything as well as they did in Win2k. Er. I take that back...

Note device specific settings in XP move to type specific settings in Vista which has been brought up before. Actually edited it before but I removed it (when I removed the Shift key reference) meaning to add it back in with more content. I haven't done it yet...

Another year and no data... HKCU\...\AutoplayHandlers\DisableAutoplay is set by that tickbox. There are few official references to this key on the web. AutoRun vs. AutoPlay

Is it possible to disable AutoRun but keep AutoPlay? How?

AutoRun is dangerous, and should generally be disabled. But, it would be convenient to still be able to automatically play inserted audio CDs and video DVDs. Is this possible?

There is a registry trick to kill autorun.inf processing, credited to Nick Brown:

Basic AutoPlay seems to keep functioning in XP after this registry tweak. This change completely inhibits the ability to run autorun.inf files, so installing some software then requires the ability to view and understand such files, to find the .exe file that needs to be installed.-96.233.20.116 (talk) 20:31, 11 June 2012 (UTC)

Although this article is sound, clear and detailed I strongly support the fact that it is in need of and has room for a major update, covering the later Microsoft OSs (Win7 and Win8) and more info on "Cross-Platform Networking" taking into concideration the plethora of Mobile Devices on the market today, which by the way is going to increase in the future. A Bug, not a Feature

My experience comes from autoplay on the web rather than in Windows - I am not sure why this article is specific to Windows - but autoplay breaks things and autoplay is an accessibility problem for many people with sensory processing issues, epilepsy, and so on. 71.191.163.95 (talk) 13:26, 6 May 2015 (UTC)
