Assertion[edit]

As I know, azeris of Dagestan are completely different nation from Azeris of Azerbaijan. Their language is of parsian group and not turk. Another religion: shia vs. suni. ...my source of knowledge - i born in Derbent, Dagestan. Many if not all my childhood friends are azeris. david_tm —Preceding unsigned comment added by 88.154.197.51 (talk) 20:23, 25 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Contradictionary?[edit]

The section about Derbent claims that by 1897, Derbent "still" was an Azeri town. I sincerely don't believe this was correctly paraphrased from the source. In the 1886 counting of Dagestan, the majority population of Derbent were Iranians (Russian: персы).[1] There's something wrong here, either this article makes a wrong claim, or the 1886 census trolled us. I mean, if Azeris (Transcausian Tatars) were recorded as Iranians solely based on religion, and not based on language, other cultural aspects, appearance, customs, etc, then why does the 1886 counting also mention Transcaucasian Tatars alongside Persians? More than 7% of the total population to be precise. Useful imput would be really appreciated. - LouisAragon (talk) 23:52, 28 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
