Literal vs figurative Translations[edit]

In English you would say "Bend Over" to mean the same thing a German would mean if he told you "Bück Dich". Between languages there are differences in HOW you say something, even between British and American English. As a bi-lingual speaker of 2 very dissimilar languages (Japanese and English) I know there are quite a few times where the literal translation does not come close to what the speaker is trying to say, most noticeable in movie subtitles, where the direct translation is usually laughable. As a coincidence, in First Entry above, I translated what the sentence said and what it meant. Notice they are not the same, and even the direct translation is not 100% direct because -ちゃったので[chattanode] can not truly be translated, it is a conjugation that means something like "because it was done" but you don't really say that in English, and you can not just say it like that in Japanese, it has to be added to the end of a verb. Like if you were to translate "Que Feo" you would not say "What Ugly" you would say "How Ugly".Billy Nair 19:54, 23 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

"Que Feo" is usually expressed as a question ("¿Qué feo?") and could be figuratively translated as "How Ugly", but it's less confusing to translate it as "What Ugliness" (Qué means what in a question when it has an é as opposed to an e) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.30.60.58 (talk) 15:43, 17 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I guess that was a bad example, try this one, from English to any other language: we say "I am going to take a shower" we are not actually going to pick it up and go somewhere with it, so you would have to translate it different in another language... - Billy Nair 01:05, 10 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
