Reviews section[edit]

I cut this section from the article:

Newsmedia Reviews[edit]

  • The San Francisco Chronicle has called the Company's rebirth "a major victory for American culture" [1].
  • The San Francisco Examiner commented that "this may also be the artistic organization that finally mobilizes the elusive community spirit in dot-com land...into a legacy for the future." [2]

Not sure it's appropriate, definitely not NPOV. phoebe 09:31, 23 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

"History" and "Artistic Vision" sections removed as copyright violations[edit]

Unfortunately, the sections "History" and "Artistic Vision" are copyright violations from a Ballet San Jose Silicon Valley press release found here: [3]. I found the release while looking for some historical information to add to this article. I am deleting those sections. Someone who is up to it can rewrite it from that source, of course.

I'll add the document as an external link in the meantime. TJRC (talk) 02:28, 22 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The press release referred to above now sits at [4]. TJRC (talk) 02:12, 5 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

2012 updates[edit]

Following this conversation, I have removed some of the information about current events at BSJ which was basically controversial information about living people, for which Ballet News is not a sufficiently reliable source. I also changed the way the major contributor and current chairman is mentioned as the existing content was a synthesis based on what the SFC reference said and taken account of a second SFC reference. Clearly this is a significant hiatus for the company. During the next month or so, I imagine that further information will become available and the Artistic direction section can be better integrated with the rest of the article, perhaps as a para in the History section. --Mirokado (talk) 02:34, 5 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

As discussed last month, I would like to state that I am an employee of Ballet San Jose and have a potential conflict of interest, so I am requesting changes in this forum.

1. Information was recently added to the "History" section in the following paragraph:

"In January 2012, long-standing conflict between John Fry, the organization's board chairman and primary donor, and Dennis Nahat, the founder and artistic director, resulted in Nahat being forced out of the company."

While the paragraph does correctly cite the SF Chronicle article by Mary Ellen Hunt, the information contained in the above paragraph does not strictly adhere to the information in the article. Hunt writes: "In late December, Fry contacted Nahat for a meeting, also attended by Karen and Walter Loewenstern, at Nahat's home, in which Fry laid out the details of the new partnership. Both Nahat and Loewenstern say Fry confirmed his intention to continue Nahat's salary through June 2012 and said the scores of ballets he created would remain in the company's active repertoire, but under a new arrangement there would be no artistic director."

The Wikipedia page states that Dennis Nahat was informed of changes to the company structure in January 2012; however, Hunt reports that Nahat first received this information in December 2011. Hunt's article does claim that Nahat received a letter from Executive Director Stephanie Ziesel "removing" him from his position as Artistic Director, but the exact date of the letter is not specified. In either case, Hunt does go on to state that the aforementioned meeting occurred in December.

(Statement removed because it was irrelevant to these proposed changes. --Neptune95 (talk) 00:48, 31 January 2012 (UTC))[reply]

2. The second change deals with the wording of the last sentence in the above paragraph, which is vague and potentially misleading and leaves out important information about John Fry's replacement. That sentence, which also cites Hunt's article as well as two additional articles, is as follows: "Shortly after, Fry stepped down from the board, leaving Kathy Kolder, Vice President of Fry's Electronics."

While the sentence correctly states that John Fry has resigned and Kathy Kolder remains on the Board of Directors, the actual meaning of the sentence is unclear. Hunt reports that the new Board Chair is Lorraine Gilmore of Edison Pharmaceuticals. Kathy Kolder is not John Fry's replacement, and to state that Fry has stepped down and "left Kathy Kolder" seems to me to be potentially misleading. This paragraph from the Hunt article clearly states that Lorraine Gilmore is the new Board Chair:

"Lorraine Gilmore of Edison Pharmaceuticals will succeed him as chair. Loewenstern says that Fry's resignation does not mean that he or Fry's Electronics will exert any less influence on the company, pointing out that Fry's Vice President Kathy Kolder remains on the board and that Fry reportedly intends to continue his financial support of the company."

Lorraine Gilmore's new position as Board Chair is also reported in a San Jose Mercury news article that preceded the SF Chronicle article by several days: "Succeeding Fry as chair is Lorraine Gilmore, who was director of education at the former American Musical Theatre of San Jose and now directs the office of the CEO at Edison Pharmaceuticals in Mountain View."

3. In the "Artistic Direction" section, a new sentence has been added which states: "In January 2012, the ballet removed Nahat from his role as artistic director" (Citation: Mary Ellen Hunt's SF Chronicle article). Again, Hunt's article actually states that John Fry informed Dennis Nahat that "under a new arrangement there would be no artistic director" during a December 2011 meeting. Whether or not the wording is changed, the date should be corrected to reflect the actual information in the article.

4. I will be updating the list of company dancers today, and the information will be taken from the Ballet San Jose web site. --Neptune95 (talk) 21:08, 27 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the link, Robert. I am aware that my proposed changes may be disagreeable to other editors, but that is why I proposed them on this talk page. In the above statement, I am asking that the dates be changed to reflect the actual information in the article. I also ask that someone add Lorraine Gilmore's name to the article as well because she, not Kathy Kolder, has replaced John Fry as the new Board Chair. I am only disputing the information that is taken incorrectly from the article itself. Thank you! --Neptune95 (talk) 00:31, 31 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I have started to look at this article again and will make changes over the next week or so. The details of new board membership do need completing, it looks as if the editor never got around to finishing that sentence. The sources refer to Nahat being "ousted" in January and the article does mention a long-standing conflict, in the context of which it does not seem necessary to be more precise about when who may have known what, so I won't for now add a mention of the December meeting which would make that part of the article yet longer with little benefit. I also think that the personalisation of the conflict between Fry and Nahat is overstressed in the article as the sources refer more to conflict between the board and Nahat: "The biggest headlines came from the increasingly tense relationship between Dennis Nahat, ..., and the governing board, led by John Fry" (NY Times ref). --Mirokado (talk) 00:04, 19 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

2013 New Artistic Leadership Announced[edit]

As stated before, I am an employee of Ballet San Jose and therefore have a potential conflict of interest. I would like to request that the following information be added to the Wikipedia article in the Artistic Direction section, or wherever the page moderator thinks it is relevant or necessary:

Ballet SJ recently announced new artistic leadership, engaging former American Ballet Theatre Principal dancer José Manuel Carreño to be the company's artistic director. The information was first made available on balletsj.org on Wednesday, June 19. The San Francisco Chronicle was the first major publication to announce the news in an article by Allan Ulrich, published online on June 19.

Thanks for your consideration! --Neptune95 (talk) 20:16, 20 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I will have a look at this now... --Mirokado (talk) 20:59, 20 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Done I've added the information with the suggested reference and done some spring cleaning. I've also updated José Manuel Carreño. --Mirokado (talk) 22:57, 20 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
