History section problems[edit]

1. "The Agena upper stage was repaired and used for later flight."

The reference say: "The Atlas was a write-off, as was the Agena."

2. "A later review of hardware serial numbers lead to the conclusion that the satellite payload had not yet been mounted on the rocket during the failed test.[3]"

The reference says: "There were no missing numbers in the Agena list, leading him to conclude that the vehicle on top of the Atlas that day was probably either a dummy stage or a facilities verification version of the vehicle, not an actual flight vehicle."

The check of serial numbers was not about the payload per se. It was about the (upper stage) vehicle, which, it was concluded, was not an actual flight vehicle Agena. That vehicle would not have had the actual payload mounted on it -- ie: it was not that the payload wasn't mounted "yet".
