Name

Is this bank called New York Bank of United States or New York Bank of the United States? Both appear in the article. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 155.198.14.195 (talk) 09:36, 18 September 2008 (UTC)

There is no "the". Joshdboz (talk) 23:23, 25 October 2008 (UTC)

The name of the bank was The Bank of United States. "New York" does not appear in the name.

Nor was it headquartered in the Bronx. Its HQ was at Fifth Ave and 32nd St, Manhattan. When it collapsed in 1930 it had 58 branches in Brooklyn and Manhattan and the Bronx. see: New York Times Oct 30 1930 and Werner, M.R., Little Napoleons and Dummy Directors, Being the Narrative of the Bank of United States, N.Y.: Harper & Brothers, 1933. In most cases where sources place the word "the" before "Bank of United States", "the" has a lowercase "t" which suggests it is not part of the name. Other sources simply say "Bank of United States", without "the" before it. --JHP (talk) 05:15, 4 February 2009 (UTC)

Requested move

Suggest move to Bank of United States.

There are plenty of sources that refer to this bank as "Bank of United States". I cannot find any that refer to it as "New York Bank of United States", except articles that quote or cite this article. (Notice it is "Bank of United States", not "Bank of the United States".)

There is a problem with moving this article, though. The intended destination is currently occupied by a redirection page. The simple solution would be to delete the redirect, move this page, and then place a disambiguation tag at the top of this article to correct anyone who is really looking for "Bank of the United States".

The process of moving a page to a location currently occupied by a redirect, without upsetting other Wikipedians in the process, is above my Wikipedia comfort level. I request the help of an administrator. --JHP (talk) 05:02, 4 February 2009 (UTC)

As an argument in favor of moving this article, let me point out that "New York Bank of United States" violates Wikipedia naming conventions, because "Bank of United States" is the common name. (It is also highly dubious whether "New York Bank of United States" is even the correct name.) --JHP (talk) 03:35, 6 February 2009 (UTC)
Bank of the United States is a dab page, between two much better known institutions. This is not primary usage for name and should also be dabbed: Bank of the United States (New York) and Bank of the United States (New York charter) are reasonable choices. NOTE: The RM is not for a move to Bank of the United States, but rather to Bank of United States (no 'the'), the correct name of the institution in question. --Regent's Park (Rose Garden) 02:30, 9 February 2009 (UTC)
Hm. I'm not sure that's enough distance between the name not to disambiguate, having confused them myself. What do others think? Septentrionalis PMAnderson 16:30, 9 February 2009 (UTC)
I tend to think that 'Bank of United States', since it is missing 'the' all important article, is an odd enough phrasing that it is unlikely to mislead. The way it is structured now, Bank or United States is a redirect to Bank of the United States, which probably explains how you ended up there. I'm also uncertain about alternative titles, all of which seem unnecessarily cumbersome. Bank of United States (private bank) or Bank of United States (New York) etc. are less than ideal. Either way, I'm semi-agnostic on the way this goes because readers will arrive at the disamb page first and there will be no confusion. (Perhaps, we should relist for more opinions.)--Regent's Park (Rose Garden) 18:00, 9 February 2009 (UTC)
Or, how about Bank of United States (defunct bank)? --Regent's Park (Rose Garden) 18:01, 9 February 2009 (UTC)
There may be more than one defunct bank. There were a lot of wildcat banks in the 1830s, many with grandiose names. Septentrionalis PMAnderson 23:34, 9 February 2009 (UTC)
Oddly enough, no. There are many xxx bank of THE united states (First, Second, etc.) but only one 'Bank of United States'. There have been more than one Bank of America but, apparently, most bank namers stuck with the grammatically correct 'the United States'. Plus, this was no wildcat bank. It was respectable but caught up in, surprise, over extending itself on mortgages and real estate loans!--Regent's Park (Rose Garden) 02:16, 10 February 2009 (UTC)
  • I moved it to Bank of United States for the time being. We can discuss this further but I do want to submit it to DYK (can't do that while the name is still being decided). --Regent's Park (Rose Garden) 15:21, 10 February 2009 (UTC)
