Fact check[edit]

There are so many mistakes in this article. To identify two -

-: How can the Union Bank fail in 1840 as a consequence of the economic crisis of 1848-49???
-: The HSBC was founded in 1865 in London. How the hell could it have started its operations in calcutta in the 1850s???

Number[edit]

We should be current - there are currently only nationalized banks, and this is an old News: more than a decade before New Bank of India was absorbed into Punjab National Bank. --Bhadani 13:45, 10 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Title[edit]

What do people think about making the title of this article tie up with the Category:Banks of India? It would make it the "this category is about.." article, in the same way as Category:Banks of the United Kingdom has one. Thoughts? Ian3055 15:46, 5 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Early history[edit]

I think some contents from the lead sentences may be integrated into the section Early History, or vice versa - perhaps, both the sections (lead sentences and early history just created by me) require a little tweaking to make the flow smooth. --Bhadani (talk) 17:03, 29 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Moreover, we may create a separate page for List of banks in India, instead of loading the page with many red links and a lengthy list. I shall be doing this very shortly or request someone to do this if he/ she wants. Thanks. --Bhadani (talk) 17:08, 29 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Islamic Banking?[edit]

I'm pretty sure there was Islamic banking before the 18th century in India...

Lead paragraph[edit]

I find that the lead paragraph of this article is missing. Let us try to do something. --Bhadani (talk) 16:59, 8 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Bank of Delhi[edit]

The page Indian Rebellion of 1857 contains a photograph with a title "Bank of Delhi was attacked by mortar and gunfire." from Wikimedia. Further information on the Wikimedia page says that "taken in 1858 by Major Robert Christopher Tytler and his wife, Harriet. The bank had been damaged by mortar and gunfire during the rebellion of 1857." Despite my best efforts I could not find any information on the existence of a bank with that name in that period, rather at any time in the text available on the history of banking in India on Wikipedia or anywhere off Wiki. I thus request, if anyone could enlighten us about this bank - when was it opened? By whom? When was it closed? Why? What happened to its assets and liabilities? Where exactly in the present Delhi the building is situated? Was it attacked by the mutineers intentionally or was it damaged collaterally? If it was attacked intentionally, then why? Were some Europeans taking refuge in the building? Or did the mutineers loathed the institution itself? If they loathed the institution why? Kindly help in getting the answers. --RezviMasood (talk) 06:05, 30 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Post Script: The same photograph appears on the page Chandni Chowk with a different caption "Begum Samru's Palace at Chandni Chowk, Delhi, 1857, after Indian Rebellion of 1857". Another page Begum Samru also depicts the photograph with the caption "Samru's Palace at Chandni Chowk, Delhi, 1857, after Ghadar, Indian Rebellion of 1857." The page describes the place in the text as "Begum Samru's palace in Chandni Chowk was built in a garden gifted by Akbar Shah, a later day mughal, to the Begum when he ascended the throne after the death of Shah Alam in 1806. Her palatial building still stands in Chandni Chowk, New Delhi. It is currently owned by the Central Bank of India, Chandni Chowk Branch."

Someone kindly resolve the matter --RezviMasood (talk) 06:31, 30 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
