One had to be a Citizen of the UK and Colonies - rather than a British subject - to acquire Barbados citizenship. Article amended and link to Barbados constitution added.

Moved rights from article to here.[edit]

This section which was copied from the article is about rights of citizenship, not acquiring nationality. Perhaps an article on citizenship should be written to discuss rights and obligations of citizens of Barbados. SusunW (talk) 22:17, 31 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Citizens at least 18 years of age have the right to vote and the right to contest in elections. Voting is optional.
Citizens have the right to join any trade union or political party.
The constitution states that persons may not be persecuted for their religion. All religions are free to practise as part of freedom of worship.
Citizens have the right to hold a Barbadian passport and to receive assistance by Barbadian consulates, embassies, and high commissions all around the world.
Citizens may move about the island freely without seeking permission from any authority.

Barbadians enjoy certain privileges as citizens of a member state of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). As with many of the other countries of CARICOM, the Barbadian passport bears the emblem of CARICOM."
