British v. American usage[edit]

A Briton who has been hospitalized is invariably said to be 'in hospital.' An American similarly situated is said to be "in the hospital." Likewise, a Briton studying at an institution of higher learning is likely said to be 'away at university'. This formation is unlikely to be heard even in the mouth of a very Anglophilic American. Anyone care to enlighten me?2600:1004:B1C7:376F:0:11:A1DB:B901 (talk) 18:26, 9 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
