Untitled[edit]

If memory serves me right, this painting was the object of particular ridicule by the miriskusniki such as Alexander Benois and Konstantin Korovin. It's tough to find citations though. --Ghirla-трёп- 14:38, 25 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

collapse[edit]

"They are at the point of collapse from exhaustion, oppressed by heavy, hot weather."

Says who? The only reference given is to a book about Dostoevsky, which seems neither relevant nor authoritative. There's no sign of collapse in the picture ... most of the men are leaning, of course, due to the nature of the activity, but the young man and the fellow with the pipe aren't even doing that. The assertions here seem to have come from the imagination and poor observation skills of some editor, not from reliable sources. -- Jibal (talk) 05:10, 30 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Barge Haulers on the Volga
Barge Haulers on the Volga is an oil painting on canvas completed between 1870 and 1873 by the realist artist Ilya Repin. It depicts eleven men physically dragging a barge on the banks of the Volga River. Depicting these men as at the point of collapse, the work has been read as a condemnation of profit from inhumane labor. Barge Haulers on the Volga drew international praise for its realistic portrayal of the hardships of working men, and launched Repin's career. It has been described as "perhaps the most famous painting of the Peredvizhniki movement [for]....its unflinching portrayal of backbreaking labor". The blurb contains an unattributed quote. The main article has a citation, but it's a dead link. And the blurb claims the picture depicts "these men as at the point of collapse", but there's no source for this claim (which is not supported by observation) ... see my "collapse" comment above.
