When were barracks first used in England / Britain?[edit]

Removed computer games section[edit]

I removed the computer games section because nobody is going to care about this. If put back, please don't include pointless trivia about individual computer games as was contained in the text I removed. Here is what I took out: "Buildings called 'Barracks' feature prominently in many war-based computer games. For example, in Sid Meier's Civilization series, any units created at a city with a Barracks automatically gain 'veteran status', giving them a 50% attack and defense bonus. 'Barracks' are training structures in many RTS (real-time strategy) games. Generally, in such games, 'barracks' produce the most basic infantry units until further "upgrades" in technology are researched". --Xyzzyplugh 12:52, 1 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Cultural image[edit]

I think there is a certain image of militarism associated with barracks, e.g. that of quartering soldiers anywhere (an issue of the American Revolution), that should be discussed. John Riemann Soong 21:34, 30 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Barracks are military buildings not architecture[edit]

I've recast the definition because I think it should explain what barracks are and why they are built rather than just repeat the cliche about them being boring or repetitive designs. Unfamiliar term[edit]

The "U.S. Armed Forces" section says, ...these servicemembers are generally housed in individual rooms conforming to the DoD's "1+1 standard," though exceptions still exist. Could someone add an explanation of what this "1+1 standard" is?
