Summary[edit]

I suggest we eliminate this article, or most of the content in it, altogether. If you compare it to the article on Football at the 2008 Games (and its separate articles on the Men's and Women's tournaments), it is far more redundant. MrArticleOne (talk) 01:35, 8 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Let's keep this article. Basketball is not shown in full on TV, and this is the only site that gives me complete updates. While the US-Germany game was in 1st quarter on TV, it was already on 3rd quarter here. Also the China-Greece game wasn't shown on TV, and I updated myself by reloading this page. If similar articles involving other sports are not as complete as this one, it's their problem.

one point for losing a game?[edit]

i checked the FIBA site and they do actually give 1 point to losers, and 2 to the winners of a match... That sure seems bizarre to me... not that it makes much sense having points to begin with, the way i see it. jonosphere (talk) 19:04, 10 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

image[edit]

The article Volleyball at the 2008 Summer Olympics uses a similar infobox as basketball, and recently the image in the infobox of the Beijing Games was removed, and a note was added to the infobox template that the official games image should not be used. Basketball at the Olympics still use it. Don't know if it's best to remove the image from the basketball infobox, or re-add the image to the volleyball infobox.Bib (talk) 20:27, 13 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've removed before I read this comment. Be 'bold and choose whichever. IMO, it should be removed since the Official Games logo is non-free. It should only be used on the Summer Olympics and the Dancing Emblem articles. --haha169 (talk) 06:17, 14 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Colors Error?[edit]

I believe that someone has jumped ahead in highlighting teams that have been eliminated or advanced to the next round. For instance, Argentina has only played 2 games thus far and has not been eliminated yet they are already highlighted in red. Again... Australia isn't qualified yet. For example, LIT beats CRO, IRI beats ARG, you get AUS, ARG and CRO with 2 wins, RUS with one. AUS, ARG and CRO don't play each other, so they can all lose, and get a 4-way tie with AUS, ARG, CRO and RUS having 2 wins each. Medal round error[edit]

Many mistakes[edit]

This page is showing why I think it was foolish to have 3 separate articles: Basketball at the 2008 Olympics, Men's Basketball at the 2008 Olympics, and Women's Basketball at the 2008 Olympics. We can't effectively keep an eye on it all the time and there are all sorts of problems. Since when is USA guaranteed to advance to the Gold Medal Game, irrespective of the outcome of any of the other Knockout Round games (of course, they aren't, but the current chart shows them there already). I agree. Why not eliminate everything in the Men and Women sections of the main article except for the link to their specific articles? Take a look at UEFA Euro 2008, UEFA Euro 2008 Group A and UEFA Euro 2008 knockout stage. Each article has the same information but differing depth. In this article, the prelim round games scores are only listed, while on the men's and women's articles, there are quarter scores and team highs for points, rebounds and assists. Not to say what was done on the Euro 2008 articles were correct, but there was consensus to do that, and that consensus was applied here.

And every Olympic sporting event article has an article like this. This article won't be deleted unless "basketball at the 2008 summer Olympics" didn't happen. –Howard the Duck 03:25, 18 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

But not everything is repeated. Only the essentials are repeated. With size regulations, you can only fit so many in a limited space, hence splitting the articles. Medal Round[edit]

The "Medal Round" (which should really be displayed as "Medal round" if you'd really insist) stands for the gold and bronze medal games ONLY. Quarterfinals and semifinals aren't "medal rounds." You don't win medals by winning in the QF and SF. –Howard the Duck 13:37, 19 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Very Serious Error[edit]

Spain is NOT the current Men's Basketball champion, as erroneously claimed on this page, under the column "Automatic Qualifiers". The basketball gold medal for Men in the 2004 Games (Greece) went to Argentina, and not to Spain as claimed here. For reference see

You're a tool. Spain is the current basketball World Champion, the FIBA World Championships are different to the Olympics. It is the FIBA World Champion that automatically qualifies and not the previous Olympic's champion. For reference see:
