Split

I believe an issue we'll be running into is that there are enough significant differences between the novel and the film that there'll be a lot of "in the novel, this, but in the film, that" to contend with, to the point that it would make this entry unwieldy. I realize that there are some cons as well as pros to this, but a separate entry for the film should be considered.

I run the fansite at battleroyalefilm.net, and could fill in most any information you require--I'm just a bit new to the Wikipedia thing and might take some time to learn the ropes. I agree - they should be split asap - For a precedent see what was done with Solaris and the various film adaptations. Hell things like V for Vendetta (film) and From Hell (film) get their own separate entries so I really don't think there will be a problem with this. If the guy proposing it doesn't feel confident about doing it then I'll sort it out - message me. I'll check back in a few weeks and if no one has raised any good objections I'll do it. Agree. This should be split, possibly three ways - novel, film, and manga, with sections indicating where they coincide and differ. Right now the article is a mess, particularly the descriptions of the plot and characters, which are all jumbled and incoherant due to the differences between the novel/manga and film. It should definatly be a 3 way split. There are almost as many diffrences between the manga and the book as there are the film and the book. It's significantly diffrent.

A split is nearly needed for this sort of thing. The movie, book, and film are all different enough to warrant a new article, especially the latter portion of the manga, which is different in many aspects to both other versions. Article changes

I went ahead and modified the film cast list--I thought the previous one looked very IMDB-ish, and the Special Version and minor characters combined with the students themselves can be very confusing. I separated the students from the minor/other characters, and the additional characters from the Special Version.

Oh, and I'm all for doing a new page for the Manga and Novel, as most of its content/premise's completely different from the movie. Same goes for the character page--some character's traits in the movie are completely different from the novel/manga (ex. Keita Iijima, Hiroki Sugimura) --Dreweid 11:43, 27 May 2006 (UTC)

Horror template

I removed the addition of the Wikiproject:Horror films template that was added earlier today. I don't believe BR really qualifies as a horror film. Dystopia and borderline SF, yes, but not horror. 23skidoo 13:44, 5 May 2006 (UTC)

Ryuhei Sasagawa

Split this page

Look, there's a film, a book, and a manga all squeezed into one article. This page needs to be split.

Here's what I'm we do:

Since it looks like the film, book, and manga are all intermingled in the lead paragraph, and probably else where in the page, keep that in mind if you decide to be bold and take it upon yourself.

I agree, mostly. The book was first, and so the main Battle Royale article should cover the book, with links to the manga and film articles (and the film article should be Battle Royale (film) per the naming conventions. Lord Bodak 16:09, 5 August 2006 (UTC)
I agree with the split (as discussed above) and it does need a disambiguation page but possibly at Battle Royale (disambiguation). On the other things - it should be Battle Royale (film). Sounds good to me - if someone comes along and really objects to it then they can alway swap the novel page to Battle Royale (novel) and then move the disambiguation page here. I disagree. While the novel came out first, the movie is more popular and widespread. I'd wager that most people doing a search for it on wikipedia are looking for the movie. I've split the film from this page as much as I could, taking out the "Film" and "Remake" sections along with some external links and categories that only dealt with the film. Battle Royale (game)

Battle Royale, is a pretty amazing game, I have played it, and i feel that it will be very big within 1 year. Its a really amazing game, and should have tournaments, and series.

The Dead

Stop editing Yositoki's cause of death. In the novel (which this page is about) he is not killed by Kitano detonating his collar, he is shot by the soldiers when he begins to threaten the teacher after Kitano says he raped Ms Anno (Yoshitoki's "mother figure"). Spoiler images

I was looking over the character pages and most of them contain images of scenes from the film. While some of these are relevant a large proportion of them are irrelevant and just seam to be either clutter or spoilers or both. For example the image which appears on several pages of Noriko Nakagawa being locked in a toilet cubicle. Do we need this?, I’m pretty sure that just writing that it happened in the film on Noriko's page is enough. Another example is Takako Chigusa there must be at least 5 images of the same scene, nearly all of which are spoilers, surly only one or two of these are needed. These are just examples of what I have seen over nearly all the character pages. Something needs to be done before the pages just become cluttered with pointless images. Removed

I removed part of this paragraph;

"The students are also given a time limit. If twenty-four hours pass without someone killing someone, then all of the collars will be detonated simultaneously and there will be no winner (in the movie, the students have 3 days or the collars will go off). It is later mentioned by Shogo Kawada that only 0.5% of Programs end in this fashion (though this is mathematically impossible, as there have only been 49 battles to gather data from, and 0.5% implies "out of 200")".

In the novel, there are fifty class selected each year, 47 per year prior to 1950, which means that there have been approximately 2441 Program run-throughs since it's institution (making the assumption that Shiroiwa is the first class of 1997 to participate in the Program). A 0.5% chance of a "time out" would suggest that roughly 12 Programs have ended in this way. User: Satyriasis 25/09/06

No, it is not. Satyriasis is right, at least according to pages 40 and 43 of the novel. Page 43 also tells that Shuya Nanahara saw Program announcements on TV at roughly every two years, which may be explained in various ways. Perhaps the program does not receive TV coverage in alternate years, for instance, or maybe the Kagawa Prefecture does not receive the broadcast half the time, or does so at times when Shuya is unlikely to be awake to watch it. At the end of the novel, it says that the tv announcements of the winners are not national just local. If the program does randomly pick classes then Shuya will not see one every year if his prefecture is not picked every year. US availability

Although I too have heard that BR is unavailable in the US (and Canada) due to the rights issues, that doesn't explain why Tower Records in Los Angeles and HMV Records in Edmonton both stocked the Directors Edition this past summer ... and neither chain carries bootlegs (or, grey area Hong Kong imports, either). What version do they have? As a regular on 2 of the main BR forums on the net, I know that there are several versions of this about (I live in the UK so can only speculate - its available freely here). Most likely it is the Korean version - that is what NetFlix commonly has. Is it that? I have yet to get my hands on a copy of the Director's Edition, however I did recently obtain a "grey area" Hong Kong import listed a Special Edition that contains both films. Only problem is there are no English subtitles but fortunately I'm quite familiar with the plot of the book so it's not too hard to follow the story, even with adjustments. This would appear to be one of the many bootlegs of this film circulating. I see no reason why a shop in American could not import one of these, or a legitimate version of the film and sell it - there is nothing to stop them doing that, it is just that there never was a general distribution. Battle Royale (novel, movie, and anime) are all perfectly legal in the United States. The lack of availability is actually a problem in distribution and publishing rights. American publishers hesitate to publish books with small reader bases, because overruns cost money. They charge extra costs because of this, which are prohibitively expensive for the copyright holder / publisher in Japan. Freedomlinux 22:04, 22 April 2007 (UTC)

Pictures

I suggest removing the pictures from the film and manga, as this article is about the novel. I could see the need for one or two, to illustrate the fact that the story has been adapted into other media, but one picture for every major character isn't needed. The class picture needs some blank space to fit at all in 800x600 or lower resolutions. Unfortunately, it looks a bit weird in 1024x768 or higher. Even so, that is IMNSHO the lesser evil. Please try not to remove that blank space. Thanks! Luis Dantas 08:35, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

  • No, because this has come up before. I think at present there is a single article on most of the students, which incorporates their role in all three media, and these three combined make justifiable articles in their own right. There was an AFD for the whole lot, and that was the decision. Can't be bothered looking for it just now though Addyboy 21:50, 16 February 2007 (UTC)

Infobox ambiguity

I was wondering how come the novel was released in Brazil and I didn't notice it, until I checked more closely and saw that the Infobox is actually giving information about the Brazilian version of the manga (as opposed to the novel). And yet there is no note to clarify that, and the illustration is indeed the novel's cover. I proppose that either three separate infoboxes should be offered, or at least the release information should be kept separate for the novel, movie and manga in order to avoid such confusion. The English language novel published in 2003 is ISBN 156931778-x Parameter error in {{ISBN}}: invalid character; the original, Japanese language novel Ota Shuppan published in 1999-2000 is ISBN 489392958-5. At least that is what the novel credits say. Luis Dantas 07:01, 11 June 2007 (UTC)

No Escape

Judging by the descriptions there it doesn't sound like much of a ripoff to me. And If we're going that far based on similarities shouldn't we also point out every other reference it could be a possible ripoff of? Cube, for instance seems to follow similar themes to the two you mention, not to mention BR. And we can't forget good ol' Lord of the Flys and the various similar stories that've been written. There's hudnreds of examples of similarities. Can't just go saying everything that came before it and is similar must be a direct influence. It'd make the article unwieldy. Why has cleared the photo the carried one of the book?

I do not understand why they have decided to clear the photo of the cover of the book. Request that please returns it to put. The readers of Wikipedia will not be able to see the cover and could be confused. So request that returns it to put.

I have been wondering why it was deemed necessary to remove the picture myself. I actually took a (frankly quite amateuristically distorted) picture of the book cover myself and tried to upload it to commons, and to my surprise it was pretty much immediately deleted. Alternate timeline

I read this book twice, and both times I got the impression that this took place in a fictional country, not an alternate timeline version of Japan. Maybe I just missed something, but is there a source to confirm this? Mad031683 20:33, 9 November 2007 (UTC)

Really? I haven't read the novel recently but I have read it quite a bit number of times but I'm sure it has references to pre-World War II Japan. Also I'm really sure the manga has references to Japan as well. While they are different versions, I would think they end up having the same setting so perhaps you could assume (but not be 100% sure about) that they are in Japan. Seperate sections on collar and danger zone

Hey, I just did an edit on the plot description here. It felt too mixed up. It seemed almost stream-of-consciousness, switching between the background, the actual narrative, and details. So I tried to straighten it out, a bit which involved pulling the collars and danger zone into separate sections (which included expanded info on the name and detonation criteria of the collars, and also on the danger zone system) and also making subsections to divide the story's back-ground from the actual narrative (On the old version, it read like 50 clases did epic battle with each other!) I did all this in two stages so I could put in links, and irritatingly it got halfway reverted about a minute after I'd finished! If it's no good, I'd be okay with it being 100% reverted. No problem. But a half-way reversion means we actually lose info. I figure EagleStorm (the person who reverted it) missed the second stage of my update - hence his thinking the info was redundant. As such I've reverted the reversion. Not looking to start a war, just trying to protect the informativeness of the page.The Zig (talk) 11:52, 31 December 2007 (UTC)

CHaracters - Should merge unless we can find real world development

I am looking through the Battle Royale manga to see what I can find regarding character development.

  • Please don't ask for a merge - this has come up numerous times before, and there have been numerous AFD's of one/some/all of the characters, and consensus has always been to keep them separate, but cover their film, novel and manga versions in each article. Remove Film References?

  • Within the next 4 weeks I'm going to do a total tear down and rebuild of this article, and the film, and that sort of thing I'll be removing. Some references to the film are fair enough, though there's definitely no need to mention film exclusive characters for example. Bear with me, when I get the chance it will happen. Cleanup Done

I've massively cleaned up the article, I think we can agree it looks a lot better now. I've re-written the plot section, incorporating some aspects of it, along with a few minor aspects of the concepts section which I've totally removed. The Characters section has also been improved, with all non-novel characters removed. More minor changes such as the removal of a deleted image and the adding of subheadings in the characters section, along with realiging an image in the plot section for aesthetic purposes (which especially works better in the context of the improved plot section length) have also been made. I'm not denying there's still work to do, and I'm not totally happy with the plot yet, but it's a start. We still need a reception and legacy section though, and far more development information. I would like to propose merging all the character articles into one article List of Battle Royale characters per WP:MOS-AM. Support heartily - Now, if there is verifiable real world information one can split a character article and make a "satellite" (like what we did with the Death Note characters), but I suspect much of this character development stuff is in Japanese. Added Themes & Reception section, removed Games section

I think adding a Themes/Reception/Symbolism section for this book adds a lot to the article. Perhaps it could be fleshed out a bit? Sales numbers or quotes/references from news articles or literary critics would be good.

I dropped the Games section as it didn't seem particularly relevant to the novel (fan works) and not otherwise very notable. I hope I'm not stepping on anybody's toes. I didn't touch anything else nor change any of the cleanup notices.

In the Viz English printing of the novel, which I have. It says Takami is currently working on a sequel, but I can't find the bibliography for the book like you can with a lot of them. Kazuo as an antagonist?

The article refers to Kazuo as an "antagonist". I'm pretty sure that's incorrect. The antagonist is really either the government or the game, but I'm not quite sure how to refer to Kazuo. Rival, maybe?Obamamaniac (talk) 23:38, 26 December 2009 (UTC)


Why the Title?

I notice that while the novel is set in Japan and written in Japanese, the original title really is the English/French words "Battle Royale", transliterated into Japanese characters. Why did the author give it a European-language title? It would be interesting for the article to address this. CharlesTheBold (talk) 16:12, 7 April 2012 (UTC)

To give it a "cool" factor or special name because many Japanese people (Asians in general) think foreign words (such as English) are cool, so using an English phrase would increase the reputation/wow factor of whatever is being produced or advertised. This is why you see random (often misspelled) words being used on T-shirts. - M0rphzone (talk) 07:12, 9 April 2012 (UTC)

Only inasmuch as the Japanese language doesn't work the same way as English, so the phoenetics are somewhat different. to all intents and purposes "Battle Royale" and "Batoru Rowaru" are the same thing. The author's a big fan of pro-wrestling, so he used the name of a wrestling event as the book title. Aratos (talk) 05:05, 19 April 2012 (UTC)
