Coordinates[edit]

The coordinates are the location of the historical marker. The battle took place at various locations within and around the town. GeorgeofOrange (talk) 01:02, 2 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

References & block-copy[edit]

(1) There are footnotes (Noe, pp. 9–10) but no references. (2) User: Diannaa noted that "Kentucky campaign of 1862" section was block-copied from Battle of Perryville. In my opinion, this 11-paragraph section needs to be condensed to 2–4 paragraphs. If we block-copied these 11 paragraphs to every article listed under the Confederate Heartland Offensive, we would be loading Wikipedia with unneeded verbiage. That's what hyperlinks are for. I'll add this to my to-do list. The references are probably the same ones that are shown in the Battle of Perryville article. I have the books except for McDonough which is only cited once and there are other citations for the particular point. I might even pick up that McDonough book if I can get it used at a low price. It could be useful for references in other articles. I think I can clean up the references rather soon. I can also work on cutting the text back. I may or may not get to the text very quickly but apparently no one else has noticed this for well over two years. Donner60 (talk) 08:19, 22 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Djmaschek Diannaa I have started to look into this. Very little in the long Kentucky campaign subsection is relevant to this battle. The Augusta action was a peripheral operation related to the campaign by its date in coincidence with Confederate operations in western and central Kentucky. The Augusta action is notable enough but should be prefaced with some information about the background of the raid itself and how it fits in, along the lines of the short prelude subsection (which has no citations). The final background section should end up much shorter. There is hardly a mention of this in the sources cited. There are several sources, however, including Basil Duke's memoirs and a few articles from some decades ago. I haven't looked at the books about Morgan yet but they may have some coverage since this involved part of his command, also in the area of Lexington at the time.
I have not found a source from which the information is copied so it could be from more than one source. The most comprehensive article is by an amateur (I think) historian from the area on battlefields.org, the American Battlefield Trust web site. It is more detailed than the article. I did not see a copyright but I think that at most I would put it in a further reading or external link section and not use it as a reference in the text. The Newton County web site has some information about the battle, but not everything that is in the article. The battle is said to have been the largest of the war for a civilian defense (for the most part a Home Guard unit in the process being formed to be more specific) against an army offensive operation.
