Dates and casualties[edit]

There were two operations carried out by the Soviets in the vicinity of Rostov - the Donbass-Rostov defensive operation, September 29 - November 16, 1941, in which 541 600 Soviet soldiers took part; Soviet casualties were 143 313 killed, missing and captured, 17 263 wounded and sick. The second operation was the Rostov offensive operation, which is the battle this article is devoted to. According to Krivosheev, the operation began on November 17 and ended on December 2; in this operation 349 000 Soviet soldiers took part, suffering 15 264 killed/missing/captured and 17 847 wounded/sick to secure the southern flank of the Soviet-German front. The Donbass-Rostov was the strategic defensive operation in the region. Because the article does not give any sources, its hard to tell where the dates came from, but the Rostov-specific Soviet operation was the Rostov Defensive Operation (5 November 1941 - 16 November 1941) by the Southern Front's 9th Army (Separate), 56th Army (Separate), and the Azov Military Flotilla. There were several operations in that area because the article points out that the Wehrmacht's 17th Army retook the city again later. I would probably want to rename the articles--mrg3105 (comms) ♠♣ 03:05, 30 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

propose renaming[edit]

This was called Sea of Azov Offensive Operation in German parlance, and I would propose moving the article to this title--mrg3105 (comms) ♠♣ 04:41, 30 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
