IJN air units[edit]

Below are the IJN air units in this battle, based at Rabaul and/or Kavieng. I don't know how to do a table, so someone can add the information to this article if they want to. The 204 Air Group is not the 204th Air Group. Each number in its and other air groups' names are discrete identifiers of descriptive information related to the unit's structure and mission. The source for all the information is Hata, p. 49, which I will add to the ref section. Cla68 (talk) 10:30, 11 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Command error[edit]

I in no way want to get into a dogfight over this, so I will merely inform those who follow this list that the commander of the 38th Bomb Group was not Col. Fay Upthegrove, who had returned from Australia in September 1942 to take command of the 99th Bomb Group, in training for combat in Europe. The 38th's commander at the time of the Bismarck Sea was Lt. Col. Brian "Shanty" O'Neill, who flew both missions of the 38th that day in the squadron lead ships. Maurer lists his date of command as 19 Oct 42, while group records show it as 6 Nov 42. Either way, the data shown on this list is woefully off the mark. A tip: reliance on Morison for anything dealing with the AAF is foolish.--Reedmalloy (talk) 02:42, 3 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
