Names[edit]

I have come across some difficulty with competitors names, particularly in Judo. What I am finding is that the names listed at the official Beijing 2008 website do not always correspond with the names listed on wikipedia. I may be wrong but i'm assuming this is the difference between the names in Belarusian(?) and the westernised versions? The athletes pages themselves appear to be under their Belarusian names (e.g. Siarhei Shundzikau) but all the pages relating to olympic results (e.g. Judo at the 2008 Summer Olympics—Men's 81 kg) use the westernised version. Does anyone with knowledge of Belarus know if this is the case and should we just set up redirects or change all mentions of the athletes to one form or another. My suggestion is to see if the website of the NOC RB (NOC of the Republic of Belarus) has the names on there. If not, then I suggest using the official website of the Olympic games for the English names. Redirects are cheap. User:Zscout370 (Return Fire) 02:37, 24 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunatley the site (at least the english version) has not been updated yet with 2008 athletes. Thanks for the suggestion though. Basement12 (T.C) 02:42, 24 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Plus, we can always move stuff later and move redirects if we have a better name to use. It's not a major concern right now with regards to the Belarusian Wikiproject, other than hoping for the medal count to rise. User:Zscout370 (Return Fire) 02:54, 24 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That's fine. I'll set up the redirects for now, just wanted to make sure we weren't getting the names horribly wrong. thanks for your input Basement12 (T.C) 03:06, 24 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
