Also, that is not standard practice. When a player's footballing nationality is ambiguous, as is the case here, it should read: "is a professional footballer who plays...Born in [X], he represents [Y]." Oppose still referred to just as 'Brereton' by e.g. BBC (in the actual prose; the line-ups come from PA I believe) and Blackburn's local paper, as well as the club itself. What he wears on his shirt does not matter, e.g. Sergio Agüero is known as 'Kun Agüero' on his shirt which is a childhood nickname... Giant Snowman 13:52, 15 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose at time of edit, it is a hard one to call given that social media profiles and the above links don't have "Díaz" at this moment. I'm also inclined to stick with the current page name until the reporters refer to him as Brereton Díaz more often, if that is the case. See also Jonathan Mensah where the name on the shirt is what he's commonly known as but the article title is his proper but not full(?) name. Oppose I just wanted to chime in here. I am part of the EA Sports FIFA database community and after discussions at length we have opted to go with Brereton Díaz in all menu's from FIFA 22 onwards. Club site, EFL panel shows such as 'EFL on Quest' are using Díaz and so is the clubs digital programme. User:jharvey2307 09:57, 18 August 2021 (UTC)

Spanish naming convention hatnote[edit]

Following WP:BRD and Mattythewhite's two reverts, I'm bringing this up for discussion. At the moment, the "also known as Ben Brereton Diaz" is right in the first sentence of the article, but there is nothing providing context as to why. The hatnote would provide that context immediately. Mattythewhite suggested that this should be used only for official names, which does not seem to be an actual WP policy but merely their individual opinion. Ben Brereton → Ben Brereton Díaz – Since August 2021 when the last discussion took place, many sources now suggest the Spanish naming convention has become the common name. Sources supporting this change include the player's social media [1], the player's own club [2], media such as BBC and The Guardian, and stat databases [3]. Unsure – I agree that he is more commonly referred to in the media as Brereton Diaz now but I am hesitant in supporting this change as birth names are still used as the article names for notable people who change their names like Kanye West and Sinéad O'Connor, where deadnaming/gender identity is not a factor. There was a ton of discussion about changing Kanye West to just Ye in the last few months but that move was not supported. Similarly, there were many requests to change Cat Stevens as well but it was decided not to do that. I think Brereton's case is similar to these three. Oppose – Largely for the reasons immediately stated above, and given that, as far as any source I have seen is concerned, he has not legally changed his name to "Díaz," I think a note in the lede (as appears right now) is appropriate, but I think changing the article to something technically unofficial is a bit misleading, even if almost everyone has taken to calling him by that unofficial name. Comment: Arguments above regarding legal/official name are irrelevant per WP:COMMONNAME. One can of course disagree over whether Ben Brereton or Ben Brereton Díaz are more commonly used now based on reliable sources, though I personally think it's pretty clear most are using the latter now (see, e.g., [4] and [5] from just now).
