What's the point of this article? It's a complete fork of Bangladeshi Americans--Bazaan (talk) 14:38, 5 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Not all Bengali Americans are of Bangladeshi origin. You are aware that Bengali =/= Bangladeshi, right? ~~AyanP

Thoughts On This Page[edit]

Not sure where else to write this, so putting it in here.

In my opinion, "Bengali Americans" is the page for American citizens, nationals, or residents who are of Bengali ethnicity. This is separate from "Bangladeshi Americans," which refers to American citizens, nationals, or residents who have ancestry (or current citizenship) from the country Bangladesh. Of course, these two groups will overlap to some degree, but ultimately they are fundamentally different concepts.

It appears that years ago, a few Wiki users decided this should become a disambiguation page. I disagree with this notion, because as I mentioned above, ethnicity should not be conflated with nationality. Further, a quick search for other similar articles (Punjabi Americans, Sindhi Americans, Tamil Americans, Baloch Americans, etc.) regarding ethnicities that cross state borders shows that none of them have been structured as a disambiguation page.

Just wanted to point out I am not a person with an agenda. I just want to see good, well-informed content on Wikipedia that is in line with and structured similar to related articles.

The community has reached a consensus that this page should be converted into a disambiguation page as the topic is already covered by Bangladeshi Americans and Indian Americans. Please stop your disruptive editing and restoration of the unsourced contents. Za-ari-masen (talk) 15:58, 17 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The consensus page you keep citing is many years old at this point and did not have many contributors. Bengali != Bangladeshi != Indian. Separate concepts. If you have constructive criticism to my thought process above, I'd love to hear it. Otherwise, stop reverting the page over and over again. Soug (talk) 16:50, 17 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
There hasn't been any significant expansion of this article since the discussion took place (this is the version) so the consensus is still valid and there doesn't seem to be any possibility of this article expanding further with contents that are not covered by Bangladeshi Americans or Indian Americans. I will and wait see if you are able to expand this article. Za-ari-masen (talk) 17:59, 17 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Excellent find! I added back in the section on Culture and Religion that "Bazaan" tried to delete many years ago. He was a sockpuppeteer with a political agenda aimed at destroying this page for no reason. Thanks! There's plenty more info that can be added to this, for example about the historic Bengali culture in Harlem, NY, but perhaps someone with more knowledge can add that information in.Soug (talk) 22:56, 17 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
