Island or Ait[edit]

I've always known this island as Benn's Island, and it is so known by Hampton Sailing Club since at least 1966 (when I was, for a time, a member). Thus I think the article title is valid, and the intro para and the redirects handle the "aitness" of it.

Technically it may be an ait. Come to that it may just be a spoil heap from dredging the nearby boatyards ages ago Fiddle Faddle (talk) 00:23, 10 December 2008 (UTC)![reply]

Almost all islands seem to have had a selection of names often depending on the owner, and most included the appellation Ait or Eyot. Good ole Fred Thacker refers to Davis's Ait at Hampton in 1843, but it is not clear if that is Garrick's or Benn's. Tagg's is now known as an island, though historically an ait. I piped Benn's as an Ait in the chain (if that makes sense), but there is no problem having the article under island if that is the most frequent name. Mind you the wretched thing has a lot more names in common use from those who shove boats upstream facing backwards. Motmit (talk) 16:10, 10 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'll make you a wild guess that it is Garrick's, just because Benn's has more names than you can shake a stick at! I suspect none of it truly matters provided the possible alternatives are documented. I see it as wholly valid to place your note on Davis's Ait in both articles with a citation to Thacker and an explanatory note expressing the doubt. That is, btw, truly not OR (though some folk mistake it for it), it is documentation of doubt! Fiddle Faddle (talk) 15:32, 11 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
