Date of 'In Service'[edit]

Hello.

According to the Army's Technical Documentation for the Army (ARMY TM 9-1005-317-10) the date of the first print of the technical documentation for this weapon dates back to 1985. I am not sure, that the first date of service is correct; I agree, that there was a revision of the technical manual was released on the 14th of December, 1990, but that was just the third after a revision in 1987 and one in 1989. I didn't want to modify the 'in service date', but doesn't this mean, that the weapon entered first in service in 1985?

Army tech. doc. produced quickly (for Army, other services) back in 1985. Possible & likely that Army had moved to M9 before other services. By 1986, U.S. Navy move from Colt to Beretta remained topic of discussion, but Navy shipboard watchstanders still carried Colts. USMC did not complete move to M9 until early 1990s. Users[edit]

The statement that the Marine Corps. is replacing the M9 with the M4 carbine is obviously incorrect, as one doesn't replace sidearms with rifles. A perusal of the cited MARADMIN source seems to suggest that it is the M16 that is to be phased out on a limited basis.

Selection for Use[edit]

Incorrect[edit]

This picture is not an M9 at all, the pistol on the picture is a 92FS model with an M9 slide. This is the actual U.S. made M9 pistol. Gladius123p (talk) 16:50, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Marines with M9A1?[edit]

Move from M9 pistol[edit]

I disagree that this is the standard, or at least that it is the de facto standard. M9 is the designation used by the military; Beretta is nowhere in its name. Other examples: M249 light machine gun (U.S. variant of the FN Minimi), M16 rifle (military AR-15), M14 rifle, etc. Other similar examples: most fighting vehicles (M1 Abrams, e.g.) and artillery (M777 howitzer, e.g.), firearms that are known by a particular name despite the official name being slightly different (M1 Garand instead of just M1 rifle) There is already an article on the Beretta 92, on which the M9 is based. M9A2 concept = M9A3?[edit]

If I'm correctly interpreting the article provided, the "M9A2 concept" seems to have all the same improvements over the M9A1 that are listed are present on the M9A3. So I'm inclined to think that the conceptualized M9A2 being described and M9A3 are basically the same pistol, with M9A3 being the name bestowed on the production pistol. I'm not going to change anything on the page yet since any changes would be too significant and I would like to get a consensus on this by at least a couple other editors.
