Why I revised much of this entry[edit]

I have extensively edited this entry because its writing and organisation disappointed me. Bern would have been embarrassed! I come to this subject because I am very much drawn to the Jewish side of American culture. Nevertheless, I am no authority on Malamud's life and work, and invite those who have read the Davis biography and/or his daughter's memoir to make more changes. For what it's worth, I think that Saul Bellow's 1976 Nobel Prize should have been joint with Malamud.

I became a Malamud fan while reading Suzanne Clark's 1990 American Scholar article about his time in Corvallis. Even though he had no Ph.D., and was employed by a department that did not offer a major at that time, Malamud courageously made waves, and left a lasting mark on OSU.

I was also much taken aback to discover that this very Jewish author, with a distinguished Hebrew surname, married an Italian-American of Catholic upbringing. (Religion aside, Jews and Italians have much in common!) He was not a practicing Jew as an adult, nor did he raise his children as Jews.132.181.160.42 (talk) 00:40, 26 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Copyright problem[edit]

This article has been reverted by a bot to this version as part of a large-scale clean-up project of multiple article copyright infringement. Problems with describing his writing[edit]

Reading this for the first time, I got stuck on the comments about the "recurring writing technique" which The Natural "focuses" on, and the idea that Malamud's prose is a "pastiche" of Yiddish-English. I have no idea what the first comment means, and I can find no source for it--except of course this Wikipedia page. A "pastiche" is an imitation: Malamud's Biblical prose in God's Grace is rightly called a pastiche in the secondary literature. But I can find no citation supporting the contention that Malamud's prose is generally an imitation of Yiddish-English. I'll remove these unless someone can clarify.
