I suggest that the reference to Bertha as mother of Arnoldus be removed. The reference is from a genealogical webpage that does not cite its source. I'll research it myself as well but I think it should be deletedTimelinefrog (talk) 11:30, 3 February 2008 (UTC).[reply]

The birth date of 539 does not work for Bertha. First, it would make her at least fifty years of age when she had her two children Eadbold and Ethelburg. Second, Gregroy of Tours History of the Franks book IV 26 impliers that Charibert was king when he married Betha's mother. Charibert became king in 561. The duty of a king is to make sure he can pass on his kingdom to his son. Charibert tried , had numerous wives (probably a consort and lesser ranks queens). His one son died as in infant and all he left was 2 girls. Girls born from a repudiated consort and a concubine?. I find it interesting that Gregory should make all this fuss about Sighebert 's aristocratic marriage to Brunehaut with Chilperic following suit with Galswinthe while Gunthram would limit himself to servants with inbetween a real aristocrat... Firstly were the women real servants(maybe if you look at them as concubine: but as consort?... Where does it lead us to Ingoberga, Bertha's mother. We know she was probably from Tours and she was related to a Gallo-Roman senatorial rank family. Bertha's once her father dies is a rich ward(she would have inherited from her father quite a few bits and bobs though naturally not the crown). She is also able to survive the terrible feuds between Gunthram and fredegunde, and Fredegunde and Brunehaut. I suspect her mother wisely kept her out of sight of Fredegunde but Brunehaut seems to have kept contact with Bertha at least regarding Augustine. Knowing how high Brunehaut was looking at herself as royal blood, we may interfere she was considering her niece as worthy of her... and we must not forget that Fredegunde or not: Radegunde was still alive, still able to welcome in her concent Bertha's young sister. Clothilde the Superb made enough fuss about 589-590 if we believe Gregory that her older and much quieter sister must have been informed of the scandal!

Who ever decided to marry Bertha to Aethelbehrt knew what he was doing: keeping the girl safe far away from a very dangerous aunt: Fredegunde and possibly uncle: Chilperic. Marrying her to a Pagan was also limitating her potential male heirs's nocivity to the crown. In 584 when Chilperic dies: nobody knows if his 4mths old son and only heir is indeed his heir (and we still do not know), Gunthram if he had not decided to recognize said Neustrian nephew was stuck with his other but Austrasian heir. IF BABY CHLOTHAR HAD BEEN DISOWNED, suddenly Bertha position would have risen to unanticipated heights. By the way, I think that the run to marriage of Chlothar's sons remind me a lot of the run to marriage of the Hanovrians after the death of Princess Charlotte...
