Locations of Interest

The topic on locations of interest did not gel with the format suggested by wikipedia for an Indian city. So it has been moved in the Wikitravel Bhopal guide.--Chintu rohit 13:05, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

Hi Chintu, lot's of good work on the article. Just a suggestion, if you could get references for all the inputs it would be great.Haphar 13:08, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

I know Haphar that all this information is without references. But I do not have much references and most of what I have written is from my personal experience. i will be most happy if you can add something from references.

Photos reqd.

Can someone please get some photos of the following:

  • Burning of Ravan's effigy on Dussehra
  • Durga Puja or Ganesh Puja jhankis
  • Namazis offering prayer in Taj-ul-Masajid
  • Interior or exterior photo of Habibganj station
  • Eunuchs dancing etc.?

Fatality figures inconsistent

It says on this page that 'The poisonous gas left hundreds of people in the vicinity dead and thousands other suffering from its effects even two decades later.' but on other wikipedia pages it says nearly 3000 people died in the immediate aftermath and many more subsequently. I think this consistency should be resolved but I'm not an expert on the subject. Billtubbs 18:46, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

Badly translated tourist-brochure waffle

This text has appeared a number of times in the article:

Jaded with the concrete jungles which hound your every waking moment Want an escape into a world which promises a picturesque setting around two magnificent lakes and gently rolling hills Take the first train or the flight out and head straight for Madhya Pradesh's capital city Bhopal, which truly epitomizes all this and more. Situated on gently rolling hills, the state capital of Madhya Pradesh is truly modern, yet has managed to retain its quaint old worldly charm. It, truly carries itself with grace and is constantly surprising its visitors a place where bustling markets and lush green gardens beckons you to forget your worries and enjoy the warm smiles and the simple life of Bhopal. Truly, a tourist's delight with its old mosques, palaces, lakes and gardens, Bhopal has managed to retain a clean, green look which is sadly not evident in most metropolitan cities in India.

Streamline

Do we really need to include things like night life and shopping malls. none of these include places/activities which are unique to or charatceristic of this city. it sounds more like "oh! now we have them too!" types. Rather include the promenade at Upper Lake, the major parks, famous eating streets, and those sorts. Varun Oberoi 63.216.63.52 (talk) 13:28, 28 April 2009 (UTC)

Education

Who said DPS is the best school in Bhopal? need to back it up with a survey or expert opinion. I might say All Saints has the most number of students and so it is the most "popular". So we need to list all the top schools and colleges like BSSS. And Bhopal does not have 70 engineering colleges. The number is around 25 right now, and that too in Bhopal district. Im talking about only degree colleges, private plus public. 63.216.63.52 (talk) 13:32, 28 April 2009 (UTC) Varun Oberoi

Industry

Can we have an "industry" section? Bhel, govindpura and allied industries can go into it. along with cottage industries like weaving and embroidery. Varun Oberoi 63.216.63.52 (talk) 13:33, 28 April 2009 (UTC)

City in Lakes?

Generally speaking, Udaipur is the Lake City. Bhopal is then "City of Lakes". This too is an internal tourist brochure / sign-board (welcome to bhopal - city of lakes) kind of thing and not universally or nationally famous as pink city or forbidden city. And if we are calling ourselves the city of lakes, then we should have a section on lakes also. Shahpura Lake and Lower lake and their sizes, volume, localities they touch, manmade/natural, potable/unpotable, etc. Varun Oberoi 63.216.63.52 (talk) 13:44, 28 April 2009 (UTC)

Can anyone provide a source from where the above mentioned data can be acquired for the article. I totally agree that such a data should be included in the article. I sincerely hope that this article becomes a featured article. It is getting such regular edits and the quality is constantly improving. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Abhishek727 (talkcontribs) 13:52, 15 April 2010 (UTC)

What we still need

These are my views regarding what more we need for the article. Anyone can post his or her views regarding the issue. Positive Criticisms are most welcome.

  • A pic presenting an overview of Bhopal, and not a single street, road or a building, and if possible, a MONTAGE.
  • A pic of a business district or center for Economy section.
  • A pic of a Starbus or a Metro Bus for Transport section.
  • A pic of a bus stand. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Goodboy2009 (talkcontribs) 09:41, 16 April 2010 (UTC)
  • A pic of Bhopal Airport for Transport section.
  • A pic of the TT Nagar and Aishbagh Stadium for Sports section.
  • Little more information about Govindpura in the Industrial Area section and a photo if possible.
  • More Information and some REFERENCES in the Media section, and a pic if possible.
  • A pic of Jaya Bachchan to be uploaded in Famous Personalities.

Great Work

waise, great work being done to improve this article. has anybody been regularly seeing it, apart from of course rohit? its improved vastly since it was first put up. great pictures also. Varun Oberoi 63.216.63.52 (talk) 13:35, 28 April 2009 (UTC)

I have been adding photos, links, internal links to the article and also doing some editing. I have added two sections 'Places of Interest' and 'Gallery' and have extensively edited the write up on the Gas Disaster. Any other regular contributors please mention your work.

On the same note, I am having a problem with a photo titled bhopal.jgp The photo is of very poor quality, having been taken using a nokia phone in very low lighting conditions. I have removed the photo several times but each time the photo is re inserted. Can anyone have a look at the photo and permanently ban or remove the photo? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Abhishek727 (talkcontribs) 13:49, 15 April 2010 (UTC)

Featured Article

Great Job fellas! I guess this is a candidate for Featured Content. Bhopal is lovely, and we should add more images capturing the beauty of this marvellous city. Suggestions:

- Panorama of Lake View Drive (VIP Road) - Picture of MACT Entrance (facade + scenery) - Panorama of city from Jail Road - MP Nagar (for the modernistic shopping experience) - Entrance and facade of Manav Sangrahalay - Hamidia Road (CBD panorama, and also, the famous Manohar Sweets) - Airport facade (as is already requested below). Info about International Airport. - Picture of Cult Places (like TT nagar Top'n'Town, Jyoti Cinema, any thing which we think "defines" the culture of Bhopal, of course, good things only ;-) )

Population

A recent edit (diff) in the population of Bhopal attracted my attention. The previous value from 2001 census was stated in the article as 2,958,416. However, upon verifying the corresponding reference[1] one can clearly see that the value instead should have been 1,458,416. So God knows how long it has been here with the incorrect value!! It looks like at some point somebody vandalized the numbers, and no body cared to check/revert.

As for the latest updated numbers, they too are incorrect. I will be correcting them soon. - Subh83 (talk | contribs) 19:05, 29 April 2011 (UTC)

I only saw this discussion after I reverted / fixed some edits regarding population. I'm not entirely happy with them, as the numbers are pretty old, but it was the best I could do. Feel free to improve them. - Chrisahn (talk) 13:18, 2 May 2011 (UTC)
I agree on sticking to the 2001 numbers as of now. The 2011 numbers seem to be for "Bhopal district" as per the government documents and I am not sure how that relates to the population of Bhopal city. - Subh83 (talk | contribs) 18:58, 2 May 2011 (UTC)

Bhopal disaster

In the course of a Good Article Reassessment (GAR) of the article Bhopal disaster it was determined that Ingrid Eckerman's The Bhopal Saga – causes and consequences of the world's largest industrial disaster (Reference 16 in this article) is not a reliable source for opinions and conclusions, per the review at http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1257585/. This particular reference has been used 6 times as a source, in this article. Additional effort, reworking the referencing of the "Bhopal disaster" section of this article, is indicated. This section can not be said to be factually accurate and verifiable, as it now stands.

One thing you didn't sign your comment, second thing how does this make the source not okay to use? Is because it calls it "biased"? One could also say the review by Carol Wood is "biased". Anyway this is unsigned comment and the source is only referred once in the article now. ElectraGrrl (talk) 16:33, 18 December 2015 (UTC)

Who keeps inflating the city area figures?

As per the latest Bhopal district census report[3], Bhopal's area is 285.88 sq km. Kolar is taken to be a separate urban area with an area of around 50 sq km. While I realize that Kolar and the Kolar municipality will probably be merged with Bhopal / BMC soon considering Kolar is de facto Bhopal anyway, that will only make the total area around 340-350 sq km.

So please stop screwing around with the data.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Theintuitus (talkcontribs) 13:52, 26 August 2017 (UTC)
