I think it's germane, and I've updated the article with this edit, also creating a new section called "Personal life". I've left out the company name and web site, to avoid the appearance of commercial promotion. External link / reference suggestion: New interview with Bill Kreutzmann[edit]

As an editor at Crawdaddy!, and to comply with COI guidelines, I am not posting the link to this interview with Bill Kreutzmann. However, I would like to recommend it on its merits, and hope that an editor will find the time to examine the interview and—if he or she sees fit—post it to the external links section, or potentially use it as a reference to corroborate and/or update this page's contents. In the interview, Kreutzmann discusses his recent musical endeavors, including the Dead's 2008-2009 dates and his work with BK3. I appreciate your time. Crawdaddy! [1]

"Kreutzmann remained with the Grateful Dead until its dissolution following the passing of Garcia in 1995, making him one of four members to play at every one of the band's 3,500 shows, along with Garcia, Weir and Lesh."

I'm not sure if that's true. In Blair Jackson's "Garcia: An American Life," he mentions that Weir and Ron "Pigpen" McKernan were both briefly kicked out of the band. Weir says that he was stubborn and never left, but I suspect he might've been on the bench for a show or two.

I would suspect, also, that someone might've sat in for Weir or Kreutzmann for a particular show. When you're talking about 3000+ shows, you're talking about a lot of opportunity for someone to take a night off.

Of course... that wouldn't have been Garcia, or it would've been billed as something else, I suppose.

Early in the Dead's history, they weren't as set in the same format, either. I live in a houseboat community in Sausalito. They played in an old, wrecked ferry there. It's not listed in Deadbase or any of those Deadhead manuals. I'm sure that they played quite a number of gigs that history hasn't properly recorded, such as house parties.

Anyway, this is a suspicious statement... "every one of the band's 3,500 shows." That cries out for verification.

I think that the statement is correct. There were a few shows without Weir and Pigpen but they were not billed as the Grateful Dead at them. I remember hearing about one show where Kreutzmann was sick and Mickey Hart is the sole drummer but I can't name it. Also there was a show in the 80s with John Kahn in place of Phil Lesh (4/25/81 I believe) but they again, weren't billed as the Grateful Dead. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.148.8.175 (talk) 04:09, 26 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Of drums both exotic and mundane[edit]

FWIW, File:Bill-Kreutzmann-and_Djembe.gif shows BK pictured with what are quite clearly talking drums, not djembes -- a Djembe has one head and is tuned with strings, while these both appear to have two and the pitch would be adjusted with pressure on the strings, as is characteristic of talking drums. Though I should say I'm no expert, Dead.net mentions that he did indeed play talking drum from time to time.
