Same scientific name?

The Argentine Black and White Tegu also has the same binomial. Something needs to be renamed or merged.

The binomial for this species should be considered tentative, at best. The story in the herp community is that an importer opened a crate of what was supposed to be Colubian tegus (T. teguixin), only to find these, but the shipping info was erroneous, so there's no clue where they originally came from. AFAIK, there is no current scientific work on their status, and there are 4 main ideas in the hobby - 1) new species, 2) hybrid between T. teguixin & T. merinae, 3) odd mutation of a known species, and 4) subspecies. There are a few photos snapped by various nature photographers that seem to show this species in the wild, so mutation is the least likely, IMHO, but AFAIK there's no way to distinguish between the other possibilities. Poorly-sourced article

There's not a lot of good scientific data out there about the blue tegu, but what is known is that they were originally imported by Ron and Stella St. Pierre, possibly from Columbia. Most of the information available about this animal is only preserved on reptile forums and as such there's a lot of he-said, she-said going on. However, this article mostly just talks about captive care and doesn't talk about the natural history of the animal or give any sources at all. My question is: how to proceed with fixing this article? Can it really be fixed to wikipedia standards without any actual sources really existing? Personally I think that merging it with the black and white Argentine tegu would be sensible. Cbonesmith (talk) 05:00, 11 July 2017 (UTC)

I think adding the sources you indicate would be the best solution, and merges would be premature, since we don't really know for sure that they're a type of Argentine B&W, nor what their relation to that species is, if so (subspecies? regional variation? color mutation? hybrid?). You're right that there's minimal scientific study on this tegu, and it may simply be that the best option is just to add what sources there are and wait until such studies are done.
