Return to Korea

Supposedly, in December of 2008, BoA will be releasing her 6th Korean Album. Very little is known about it.

I know a YouTube video is not considered a reliable "source" but definitely keep an ear out for this and then update the page with it later when more details are released

Korean Official Site

I am confused about what BoA's official Korean site is. From SMEntertainment's main page, there's a section for home pages of their artists all with the iple domain name. BoA's page is here. Is this the official Korean website or is the iLikePop site the official site? Both are copyrighted by SM (iple's main page by S.M.Online Co., Ltd, and BoA's iLikePop's site in 2000 by S.M.Entertainment Co., Ltd). Citations needed

I notice that there are practically no sources for the sales figures of her Korean albums. As I don't read or write Korean, it would be nearly impossible for me to find reliable sources. Could someone who knows the language do that? Ink Runner (talk) 06:34, 31 August 2008 (UTC)

Image and artistry

Re the content dispute raised at WP:COIN:

BoA cites Nelly, Britney Spears, Brian McKnight, Janet Jackson, P!nk, and Jay-Z along with other hip-hop and R&B artists as her influences. (Referenced to profile as Avex official BoA page [1] - translation)

Whotheman2006 does appear to be correct. The site says:

Favourite music: R&B.
Musical influences: Hip Hop.
Favourite singers: Nelly, Britney Spears, Brian McKnight, P!NK, Janet Jackson, JAY-Z.

Conflating it all under "musical influences" is introducing an editorial interpretation that isn't explicitly stated at the official site. Gordonofcartoon (talk) 18:45, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

Don't Start Now was not first single off of VALENTI

I think there is a mistake in the article. It states that Don't Start Now was the first single off of the Valenti album, when it really wasn't. Don't Start Now is on her first album LISTEN TO MY HEART, and it was released as a limited release single after her first album was dropped into stores. It is not considered a single of her 2nd album VALENTI, and I don't believe it's even a track on that album. Where can this go in the article?

I kinda summarized what BoA has done concerning how long she's been in the business and how many albums and stuff. I was wondering if someone could help me figure out how to add it to the article without messing it up.

BoA has been in the music business since 2000 (8 yrs). She has 5 Korean albums, including 3 Korean mini albums. She has 6 Japanese albums, including 2 Japanese compilation albums and 2 Japanese remix albums. She has 1 English album.

Eat you up correction

According to the billboard.com website "Eat you up" has only ever reached number 15 on the Dance club play chart. It is number 15 now and if you look at the "Peak" column it tells you the highest number that this track has ever reached is 15. Hardly a number one breakout. Link to the chart below.

Breakout for number meant the song was most likely to debut on the chart the following week. It meant nothing about her current position on the actual chart. (Moon) and (Sunrise) 15:56, 5 January 2009 (UTC)

It's me again. In introduction we can read than "BoA began composing on her own with her Japanese debut album Listen to My Heart" and on # 1.3 2006–2008: Decline in sales and continued image change that "She began using a personal computer for composing one of the songs" and the ref says "My first song composed with a personal computer made me feel a sense of accomplishment because my efforts were well rewarded". Link to BoA (album) at the article's top

From WP:DLINKS: "...any article with an ambiguous title should contain helpful links to alternative Wikipedia articles or disambiguation pages, placed at the top of the article." The nutshell is "helpful links", italicized by me. What the point of the link at the article's top to the album (with the same name) of BoA singer, the same link also integrated into the article in the first paragraph: “On October 14, 2008, under SM Entertainment USA, a subdivision of SM Entertainment, BoA debuted in the United States with the single "Eat You Up" and released her debut English-language album, BoA on March 17, 2009.” I can't see any helpful things of it: this link, as I said, in the first section, nearly below of the "top text"; it is a related link to the article's topic and already integrated into the article; the link also available at the disambiguation article Boa. I've reverted reverts of my edit without worthful reason (WP rules). It is like, for example, at the top of Apocalypto article insert text: For the film soundtrack of Apocalypto, see Apocalypto (soundtrack). — Al3xil ✉ 19:19, 29 June 2009 (UTC)

Official site

And I reverted your edit. You need to wait until the discussion is over. Now, what you are citing says that "Links to English language content are strongly preferred in the English-language Wikipedia", however, it does not say "link English language sites only". See the manual of style where it says "Linking to non-English pages may still be useful for readers in the following cases: when the website is the subject of the article". As I said on my talk feel free to seek a third opinion. MS (Talk|Contributions)

The Japanese site should clearly stay. It is an official site and it does not appear to be duplicative of the English-language site. In the words of the guideline, this is an instance where "an official site is unavailable in English."

The Korean site is a harder case. It appears to have some differences, but is very similar to the English one. I come down on the side of retaining it, as BoA is natively Korean, and the English site appears to be an English alternative to the Korean site, not the same content except in English.

First, an official site is available in English. That is, there is an English official site. Therefore, no reason to include any others per Wikipedia:El#Non-English_language_content.

On a technical note, can anyone get the smtown.com site to work? I'm only able to get the discography. The flash menu (HOME, PROFILE, ALBUMINFO, etc} doesn't work for me. Even if the site does work but the content is not significantly different as TJRC says, then there's little reason to keep it.

I don't recall ever seeing an article with multiple official sites, nor recall seeing any discussions on when multiple official sites might be acceptable. I do recall and have participated in multiple discussions about how highly promotional official sites should sometimes be excluded. While I have no problem with one official site in this case, I don't see the benefit of the others, while I do see the problem of them being highly promotional with little if any additional value. That said, biographies are definitely in the minority of the articles I edit - probably less than a thousand of them. --Ronz (talk) 01:28, 9 July 2009 (UTC)

I suggest that you reread Wikipedia:El#Non-English_language_content. It says that "[i]t may be appropriate to have a link to a non-English-language site" in the following (non-exhaustive) cases:

"when an official site is unavailable in English"
"when the link is to the subject's text in its original language"
"when the site contains visual aids such as maps, diagrams, or tables"

This is merely a list of cases. They are in no conditional order. Neither option 1 or 3 are relevant. Rather option #2 is. BoA has released multiple albums in which the "original language" is both Korean and Japanese, far out numbering her single English album. Further, all three sites are equally valuable as they are official sites.

Regarding the technical issues, the smtown.com site works well for me in IE, but not in Firefox. Bendono (talk) 03:53, 9 July 2009 (UTC)

Official site ordering

In addition to the discussion of which official sites to keep, I have edited the section to use the {{official}} template and the appropriate language icon templates.

I placed English first, given that this is the English wikipedia; followed by Korean given Boa is an originally-Korean entertainer; and then Japanese. I also felt that this is one of the few places where the {{en icon}} template is appropriate. It's potentially initially confusing to have one official site with no language indicated. It's also less visually jarring. And it's a case where, at least initially, "there is a reason why the reader would assume that a source is not in English." TJRC (talk) 00:45, 9 July 2009 (UTC)

See WP:NFC#UULP. If a free alternative exists or can even be created, it should always be used over a copyrighted image. Replacing the free image of BoA (which looks just fine to me) with a copyrighted promotional item is against Wikipedia's policy. Eugeniu B +1 20:09, 28 December 2009 (UTC)
