Boat or ship?

I've added that Boaty McBoatface is the lead boat of its class, which consists of three similar vessels. Is "boat" the correct term to use for a submarine? Mgs2804 (talk) 19:34, 13 March 2017 (UTC)

It is properly classed as an autonomous underwater vehicle, a robot that travels underwater without requiring input from an operator. Baldwin Clere (talk) 08:35, 14 March 2017 (UTC)

Autonomous underwater vehicle

Boaty McBoarface is not a remotely controlled submersible. It is classed as a new type of autonomous underwater vehicle which the makers are calling an Autosub Long Range, because it is programmed to act independently of its mothership over long periods of time, without requiring any external input after deployment. Similar names section

Does anyone object to me tidying up the section? I think it has become excessively long and cumbersome with examples and it doesn’t seem to contain encyclopedic-quality information. It's certainly not the worst example farm I've ver seen, at least everything is sourced, but I would tend to agree that it could be trimmed down. 100% agree. That section was nothing but semi-related WP:TRIVIA The section adds nothing to this article and per the prevailing sentiment here, I'm removing it and creating a separate article, List of Mcface spoofs. Names of the other two robotic sub vessels?

This BBC report 'Sir David Attenborough polar ship makes her London debut' suggests 'some' rather than one of the three robotic subs are called Boaty McBoatface, but that can't be right, surely? This page makes it clear that indeed, only one of the subs has this name. I can only assume that in the case of the BBC article, the person who wrote the image captions (often not the same as the article's author) managed to somehow confuse themselves. Funnily enough, I've been unable to figure out what the companion subs are actually called, so more than likely it's something not very spectacular... AngryHarpy‍^talk 09:05, 28 October 2021 (UTC)
