"heavily screened" "advanced age"[edit]

Grant was known for decades for taking-on all callers without reference to previous on-air topics: "Anything and everything is grist for our ever-turning mill," he would intone. In his current tenure at WABC radio, due to his advanced age of 78, his callers are heavily screened for "a propos" topics.

Here are my questions with respect to the above uncited anonymous edit which I have deleted twice.

  1. Grant did and does allow some change in topics between callers, but where is the evidence he was "known" for this, or this practice was somehow unique among talk show hosts? ([Answer: Grant's own words, "Anything and everything is grist for our ever-changing mill."
  2. Is there evidence that he was not screened at WABC in the 1990's or at WOR? [Answer: Grant admonished, on air, his screeners for "censoring" callers.]
  3. How does one calibrate what are "heavily screened" topics as opposed to "screened" topics? [As a frequent known long-time caller, I have personally experienced this.]
  4. What is meant by "advanced age of 78" and what is the relevance to the point being made here? [Answer: He's slurring his speech and cannot hear what callers are saying. ABC is therefore protecting him.}
  5. Even if any of this could be verified, what's the significance to Bob Grant's biography? [ Answer: The old grey mare, she ain't what she used to be.]patsw 18:46, 10 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Cherry picking[edit]

Some of the quotes and anecdotes about Grant in the article seem to have been cherry-picked to make him look like a buffoon. Anybody who has to talk extemporaneously several hours per day is going to make some mistakes. The anecdote about mistaking the Ohio flag for a special Obama flag seems to me to reflect hostility on the part of the person who added it. I think it's fair to discuss Grant's attitudes about race, immigrants, and immigration; I don't think it's fair to try to portray him as a buffoon by cherry-picking his mistakes and pretending that they typify him.

If the mistake had some important consequence other than simply being a way for detractors to say gotcha, then I would say it is worth including for that reason. Hadding (talk) 00:06, 5 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The Obama/Ohio flag thing was picked up (incorrectly) by a bunch of similar talk show hosts and bloggers at the time; the mistake wasn't unique to Grant. It doesn't really belong here, on those grounds. Wasted Time R (talk) 02:21, 5 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I also don't think that it's important, because mediamatters quotes rightwing hosts everyday. It was not a big story. What pioneer of[edit]

Suggested deletion[edit]

I suggest that the FAIR-sourced statement in the article be deleted per this inasmuch as FAIR should not be used for contentious statements in BLPs.--Epeefleche (talk) 03:23, 11 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

WMCA[edit]

The article states that he left WMCA in 1977, but I clearly remember that he had a weekday 4PM show on WMCA in 1981. Does anyone else remember this? Genesis 1:3 (talk) 04:26, 6 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. In fact, I was just going to note just that. This article is innacurate in that he returned to WMCA in either the late 70s or in the early 80s. I specifically remember that I used to listen to him on WMCA every day on my car radio on the way home from work in early 1981. In fact, it was on Bob Grant's show in early 1981 that I first heard mention of President Ronald Reagan being shot. I can tell you FOR SURE that he was back on WMCA as early as 1981, and he might have returned to WMCA even earlier than that.74.72.220.77 (talk) 12:10, 29 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Article should be moved[edit]

External links[edit]

There are twelve entries in the "External links". Three seems to be an acceptable number and of course, everyone has their favorite to add for four. The problem is that none is needed for article promotion.
  • ELpoints #3) states: Links in the "External links" section should be kept to a minimum. A lack of external links or a small number of external links is not a reason to add external links.
  • LINKFARM states: There is nothing wrong with adding one or more useful content-relevant links to the external links section of an article; however, excessive lists can dwarf articles and detract from the purpose of Wikipedia. On articles about topics with many fansites, for example, including a link to one major fansite may be appropriate.
  • WP:ELMIN: Minimize the number of links.
  • WP:ELCITE: access dates are not appropriate in the external links section. Do not use {{cite web}} or other citation templates in the External links section. Citation templates are permitted in the Further reading section. -- Otr500 (talk) 03:18, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
