Thanks for the pointer to the Computer History Museum source. Also, I may have a second picture/second source, with a close precedent. The second source: http://www-03.ibm.com/ibm/history/exhibits/builders/builders_evans.html

The precedent: the picture that goes with the Edgar F. Codd article. The Codd picture also comes from the IBM archive. Could you give me a second opinion whether the fair use rationale that goes with Image:Edgar F Codd.jpg would be a sufficient model for the Evans picture, with rationales getting more and more scrutiny? -- Iterator12n ^Talk 03:04, 27 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The rationale seems incomplete at that image's decription page, so I'd add some of each of the text from that one and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image_talk:Matt_Drudge_Portrait_JPEG.jpg . Time to fill in the details[edit]

Surely no one can be upset, embarassed, or afraid of the history now?

I filled in a lead to the "career" section. Unfortunately much of my source is apocyphal (I can't spell that word and it doesn't deserve it); I *know* (because I've been told more than once) that the System/360 innovation was to merge FORTRAN and COBOL (bless them both, not): I don't know, and there is no wikipedia-evidence, that he pushed the merger, but there is considerable circumstantial evidence. (Particularly the IBM history itself, given a reasonable understanding of corporate politics.)

What's really, really, missing from this article is an acknowledgement of Bob's ability as a man-manager: it is astounding, as Brooks acknowledges in the dedication of The Mythical Man-Month. I only worked for him for a brief period in 1993-1994, there are no primary references to that period that I can quote.
