We used to do this a lot in the military well before 2016 as water bottles are everywhere and you get very bored. I can't find any actual sources other than some forum posts and a few videos on sites such as Terminal Lance, though. 2601:3C8:C200:793A:249B:7F17:5E6:D12F (talk) 00:59, 7 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Why...[edit]

I don't even....

...

Why is this a thing? MgWd (talk)MgWd —Preceding undated comment added 01:16, 7 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The concept of notability is clearly not a real thing on Wikipedia. Tom Ruen (talk) 06:54, 7 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
<sarcasm>Because evidently, every single viral trend that gets picked up by multiple news outlets and then forgotten deserves an article. It may look like it needs one now, but I wonder if it will look similarly like that in a few years. (At least before it gets reinvented; it's not exactly a skill requiring high creativity to attempt when you're bored.)</sarcasm> Double sharp (talk) 10:09, 7 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Can we please delete this? What's next, an article for the video of the rat dragging a piece of pizza at a New York City Subway? Kndimov (talk) 15:31, 7 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
My favorite stupid game in college was putting hot water in a plastic bottle with some crushed dry ice and letting it explode in a snow bank (it can take up to 20 minutes), but we didn't have YouTube or Wikipedia, exploding water bottle, to document our exploits for eternity. If only we had used a rubber stopper we could have had a Water rocket#Gas. Tom Ruen (talk) 22:58, 7 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Could we have a video instead of a .GIF?[edit]

I can't remember what policy page it's on but there is a decided preference for actual videos over animated .GIFs for some technical reason. Obviously this one has worked but we should try to do things the way we're supposed to. Daniel Case (talk) 01:42, 7 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Naw, it wouldn't make sense for a video. --Apap04 (talk) 01:25, 8 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Specific brands of water?[edit]

"The type of water bottle also plays a role; for instance, the brand Deer Park Spring Water has been noted to make the task easier due to its unique hourglass shape with a third divot."
Surely this is complete fluff, there is no need to mention any particular brand of water. --Ifrit (Talk) 10:31, 7 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. I have already removed content regarding the usage of certain types of bottles in Sweden, and I support the removal of this sentence, too. Anarchyte (work | talk) 10:42, 7 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I support removal of the entire article, but at least this section needs work if it is to stay: div·ot /ˈdivət/ noun: divot; plural noun: divots; a piece of turf cut out of the ground by a golf club in making a stroke. Scottish: a piece of turf, as formerly used for roofing cottages. 148.177.1.224 (talk) 13:10, 7 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Look a little deeper. According to dictionary.com, "divot" is also a synonym for "indentation" or "dimple".--Gronk Oz (talk) 15:19, 7 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Article removal[edit]

Meltingwood Double sharp Kndimov Tomruen Sca Article removal has been proposed here: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Water bottle flipping, please give your input. Like you I am surprised that this was not deleted and even reached the main page. This nonsense has to stop. Iry-Hor (talk) 16:35, 7 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion nom closed because article is on main page. We will have to re-nom it tomorrow after it drops off DYK. Sario528 (talk) 17:22, 7 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Excessive citations[edit]

The last sentence in the intro seems a classic case of WP:OVERCITE. I can't edit it, as the page is protected, so can someone please trim the citations to a more appropriate level?

Water bottle flippingBottle flipping – Most of the sources cited in this article refer to it as "bottle flipping", not "water bottle flipping". Furthermore, the liquid inside the bottle does not have to be water, and the bottle does not have to be of water. The German Wikipedia article on the subject is also called "Bottle Flipping", not "Water bottle flipping". ArniDagur (talk) 17:27, 2 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

History in the sitcomZoey 101 S2 ep11 the spring break-up chase can be seen flipping a bottle on his hand so in fact that he was bottle flipping before 2016. That episode aired in 2006. Bottle flipping has been out well before 2016 it just didn't popularize until now GelloDATBOi (talk) 23:18, 4 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
