Brandon Marshall (linebacker) → Brandon M. Marshall – This is the Broncos digital department making this request. When tagging him on Facebook, the (linebacker) shows up on posts. Comment He's also not commonly referred to as 'Brandon Marshall (linebacker).' Is there a common ground we can meet on here? Both Brandon Marshall's played/play for the Denver Broncos, causing confusion. This seems a good case to add an edit to this title. We're happy to move on from this subject and stop linking our nearly four-million followers FB to Wikipedia. How to make this change stick[edit]

Hello, Allieraymond! I see that people here have not responded particularly politely, and I am sorry for that. Let me suggest to you four ways that this could proceed.

First, you could simply check out of here, since people will continue responding to you (a polite new editor who openly declared why you were here, which is awesome, since transparency is so important) in a rude way, which could lead to a lot of acrimony when we both should be working together. I don't want that.

Second possibility: I'll explain to you now that we virtually never accept move requests like this one when the person in question is never or virtually never called by the full name in reliable sources. This is key: if no one refers to him as "Brandon M. Marshall" in the media and other reliable sources, we can't just put that title on. It would go against our policy at WP:NATURAL - note the sentence "Do not, however, use obscure or made-up names." Unfortunately, right now, "Brandon M. Marshall" is a pretty obscure way to refer to him. But...

Third possibility: see if you can't get Brandon Marshall to get the media to call him Brandon M. Marshall. It worked for Michael B. Jordan, and it can work for Mr. Marshall. Once we get a solid number of sources doing that, WP:NATURAL all but dictates that we move the page to the title y'all want.

Fourth and final possibility: get your Brandon Marshall to cure cancer, run for President, win the Super Bowl MVP while playing both sides of the field, and release a hit pop album, and he'll suddenly be considered the WP:PRIMARYTOPIC and relegate that other Brandon Marshall to Brandon Marshall (wide receiver).

Yes I did. Nothing here is impolite (except perhaps your unfounded accusations against other editors). How exactly do you expect us to respond when a commercial organisation requests us to change Wikipedia for marketing reasons and then makes what sounds like some sort of threat (empty or not) when we refuse to do so? -- Necrothesp (talk) 13:09, 26 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

well, "Oppose obviously" is not the world's most polite way to respond to a new editor, who made a great good-faith request. There was absolutely no justification given, and there was no way for the proposer to ascertain why the request was inappropriate ("should I not have used this template? did I miss something in the instructions? did I misrepresent the position I'm advocating? ... there are a million different possible reasons, none of which were apparently worth In ictu oculi's time to give.) "Does not appear to be commonly referred to using his middle initial and we therefore should not use it" was a perfect, well-explained response. But then, when the person asked "He's also not commonly referred to as 'Brandon Marshall (linebacker).' Is there a common ground we can meet on here?", discussion would have been a good idea, instead of one-lining "Threatening to stop linking to Wikipedia is most certainly not going to help you get your way." How is this a polite way to talk to someone who clearly has no idea how we do things on Wikipedia, or why we do them that way? Red Slash 18:02, 27 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
