Brian Lara is or not of Cocoa Payol heritage

In some articles is frecuent the observation about relation of Brian Lara with Cocoa Payol heritage a trinidadian ethnic group of venezuelan descendents. Please confirm. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 186.95.41.56 (talk) 01:46, 6 May 2014 (UTC)

Childhood friendship with Dwight Yorke

I have never heard any mention of Lara and Yorke being childhood friends. More importantly, it seems implausible to me - Lara was from Santa Cruz, and later lived with Joey Carew in Port of Spain. Yorke grew up in Tobago. They grew up geographically and socially distint. Guettarda 00:41, 10 August 2005 (UTC)

Hi, Dwight and Brian are indeed very close friends and renowned party animals when they get together, but it was their fame as West Indian sporting idols which brought them together, not as childhood friends. Cheers, Steve.

This is old, but Lara and Yorke played on a T&T Under 12 Football team together, so it's entirely possible they were childhood friends although Lara didn't pursue the football career. Rasadam (talk) 08:27, 24 June 2008 (UTC)

"the leading batsman of the modern era is no doubt B.C.LARA"

Lara is the grtest batsman of the century he is not just a batsman, but an artist who can play 360 degree on the feild.

Sachin Tendulkar would be the best in Technique, but BRIAN CHARLES LARA is the architect of cricket, his bat lift charms everyone and he perfectly designs his shots , and chops the ball any where he wants.

Thats one thing which i think Sachin Tendulkar lacks behind, and he dont have the charishma of batting

My passion!! Brain Lara

Dear Brain Lara,

I am Mithu.I am 29 years old. I am your fan.I support West Indies only for you. You are my favourite player,my passion. I live in Bangladesh. My dream is to make handshake with you.I want to meet with You. But how can it possible.

If you reply me by E-mail, I will be grateful to you. I am waiting for your response.

Thanks and best regards

MITHU

Well I hope you get to meet him someday Mithu! I'm not sure if Lara's a wikipedian (but you never know I guess). By the way, another user removed your email address so that you won't be inundated with spam. Lisiate 00:38, 10 May 2006 (UTC)
Mithu, why don't you go to Trinidad and Tobago for Carnival in February 2007? Lara goes every year I think. And although I don't want to be mean I should also tell you that you can do better dream-wise than meeting that particular gentleman. But hey, go to Trinidad where he'll be jumping around in the streets for two days, then come back and tell us what you think of him.

Bowling

Well, I thought it was classed as "Left Arm Leg Break" but really the only information I had to go on this was Brian Lara International Cricket 2005. I think Cricinfo just classes it as "Legbreak" but someone said he bowls right armed. Does anybody know? Speedboy Salesman | talk page 12:09, 07 September 2006 (UTC)

A left arm leg break is known as left-arm orthodox spin (well, at least it turns in the same way as a leg break), and I think Cricinfo would have said left arm if they knew he bowled left arm. Don't know for sure, though, have never seen him bowl Sam Vimes | Address me 11:33, 7 September 2006 (UTC)

I've never seen him bowl either. But I hate the vague "leg break" that is used on cricinfo.. Speedboy Salesman | talk page 15:49, 09 September 2006 (UTC)

Playfair Cricket Annual has him as LB, which means he bowls right-arm wrist-spin. If he bowled left-handed, he would be either SLA ("slow left-arm") if a finger-spinner, or SLC ("slow left-arm chinamen") if a wrist-spinner. JH 21:29, 14 November 2006 (UTC)

Article out of date and littered with typos

I'm going to start trying to overhaul this article. Other editors are warmly welcomed if they wish to help out. --Dweller 08:31, 11 December 2006 (UTC)

Agreed, it's a right mess. It's one of those where someone is so famous you assume that someone will have looked after the article, they clearly haven't. There are whole chunks that need a decent re-write, they've been edited quite a lot and just look clunky. I note there's nothing about his career outside of The West Indian national team, he's played for Warwickshire for a while etc --Gavinio 09:50, 11 December 2006 (UTC)

Article Length

This article is a bit long (we seem to be tidying it up though!). Does anyone else think that the man of the match awards table is a bit superfluous? --Gavinio 14:34, 11 December 2006 (UTC)

Yes, I think it's unnecessary, although I did find it mildly interesting. It always seems a shame though, to delete content that's clearly been lovingly worked on. --Dweller 14:49, 11 December 2006 (UTC)
My thoughts exactly - could we integrate the MOM awards into the hundreds table (eg to mark where he was also man of the match) or have a look at Sachin Tendulkar's page where only notable MOM awards are included. The trouble with that is that it's subjective. Would some of Lara's stats be worth a separate article? This would enable us to substantially trim this article, whilst not deleting content. --Gavinio 16:04, 11 December 2006 (UTC)

Can anyone contribute a picture/s of Brian Lara

Please, can anyone put a picture/s of this great man that does not violate copyright issues? Brian Lara Wikipedia page requires pictures of him -- a portrait image and some cricketing images. Thanks 130.194.5.130 00:30, 28 January 2007 (UTC)

We'd love to, but it's difficult to get hold of freely-licensed images. Usually it needs someone to take a photo at a match. Stephen Turner (Talk) 05:35, 28 January 2007 (UTC)
I added a pic I took of Lara in action for West Indies against India at Kensington Oval, Barbados, in 2002.--ukexpat 02:30, 28 May 2007 (UTC)

Editing conflict

Trying to remove text copied from BBC Website Commentary, editing conflict made a bit of mess of the page. Waiting out your edits. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Feelfreetoblameme (talkcontribs) 03:04, 22 April 2007 (UTC).

Opinionated Statements

While checking this article for a project assigned by my employer here at the library, I noticed several opinionated statements in this article, particularly around 'Retirement', with statements around the tone of 'Brian lara is the greatest cricketer ever' , 'who knows when he would return to the game?' and 'the fans would never forget'.

Now, while I respect that this man has a lot of fans, could anybody looking to edit this article please show some discretion and keep this article as factual and encyclopedic as possible? The last I checked, this is not a fan page, and we should not include personal opinions of him in an encyclopedic article, according to the Wikipedia guidelines. Thanks. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 196.3.143.34 (talk) 15:16, 10 May 2007 (UTC).

Lara as captain

Would anyone care to highlight the performance of the West Indies Cricket Team under the captaincy of B. C. Lara? Respectfully, SamBlob 16:15, 12 May 2007 (UTC)

Has Lara embraced Islam?

The news is buzzing the internet... that Lara has embraced Islam. Lara has been, it is reported, convinced about the divinity of Islam by ex-cricketer Saeed Anwar and Pakistani pop icon turned preacher Junaid Jamshed and he accepted Islam as his religion.

POV Question

Wikipedia states that Lara is "arguably the greatest batsman ever" but that "statistically the greatest batsman of all time" is Don Bradman. Since "arguably" is clearly the writers' POV I would suggest that Bradman is better qualified for that accolade given his superior batting average. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 194.202.122.253 (talkcontribs) 15:17, 21 May 2007 (UTC)

Changed it to arguably the greatest West Indian, since whilst most (if not all) impartial followers of the game would find Bradmans feats make him the greatest (ref http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wisden_Cricketers_of_the_Century) changing the phrase to West Indian greatest is certainly less questionable.--TheRack 05:22, 22 May 2007 (UTC)

Picture with President Obama

Currently, the picture of Brian Lara with Barack Obama is subtitled as: '....Obama had asked to meet Lara, whom he described as the "Michael Jordan of cricket"'.

I do not think that President Obama comparing Brian Lara to Michael Jordan has any significant educational value on this topic. Michael Jordan is regarded by most people as the best person to have played basketball, and if not the best, one of the top 3. This comparison by President Obama sends out an implication that he is as good as, or better than other great cricketers in history, such as Don Bradman, Gary Sobers, Sachin Tendulkar, Viv Richards, Shane Warne, Muttiah Muralitharan and Wasim Akram, to name a few (don't get me wrong, I have nothing against Lara). Furthermore, President Obama is not known for any special knowledge of cricket. As such, his opinion of Brian Lara does not necessitate a place in an encyclopedic entry such as this. —Preceding unsigned comment added by One Time (talkcontribs) 06:41, 6 July 2009 (UTC)

Silly statement

"Remarkably, he is the only batsman to have ever scored a hundred, a double century, a triple century, a quadruple century and a quintuple century in first class games over the course of a senior career"

How can this be remarkable if hes the only batsman to ever score 500 in 1st class cricket? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 155.198.41.29 (talk) 18:09, 16 December 2009 (UTC)

Images

I would like to suggest that the images in this article be moved around a bit. Rather than the current ibox image (which is a crop of the later image of Lara with Obama), may I suggest we use my image (File:BrianLaraUkexpatCropped.jpg) of Lara in action for the ibox and remove the bigger image of which it is a crop from the article? We can leave the Lara/Obama image where it is as it shows his international stature even in a country not know for its cricket (even though the first recognised international match was actually played in the US!). Thanks.--ukexpat (talk) 13:45, 20 October 2015 (UTC)

  • @Ukexpat: Support, I think the in-action shot is more relevant to his career and higher prominence makes sense. --  R45  talk! 14:55, 20 October 2015 (UTC)

Adding a video?

Brian Charles Lara!!! What a batting genius he was. The best batsman to play in the modern era. He is way above any other modern day greats. None could match his utter domination and demolition of mighty bowling attacks. How about compiling a short video of his stroke-play and adding it to this page?
