Is it Brigthon-le-Sands or Brighton-Le-Sands? If the latter, this article needs to be moved. Rockdale Council seeem to think that it's the latter. mgekelly 05:05, 26 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Are you sure about this? The Sydney UBD street directory has Brighton-le-Sands.

While "Brighton-Le-Sands" has been official since 1970 it is still rarely used. The telephone book for 2006/7 still uses "Brighton-le-Sands" It will be the source of spelling for many people. "Brighton-Le-Sands" is appropriate for use of the name after 1970 unless the source uses the "le" form. Then the form used in the source is the correct spelling. "(sic)" can then be placed after the name. The form of a word used should always be the same as its source. This is what students are taught for essay and thesis writing.
The name "Brighton-le-Sands" is correct for all referencs to the suburb prior to 1970 unless the source has "Le" or that it can be shown that the form "Brighton-Le-Sands" was official before 1970. Hence, use of "Brighton-Le-Sands" for mention of the suburb prior to 1970 is just as incorrest as "Brighton-le-Sands" for references after 1970. N.B.: this applies to this entry on the suburb. References show that the name "Brighton-le-Sands" was given to the suburb and the Post Office in about 1903. See more discussion below. User:Phayla 22 April 2007

Please do not keep changing 'Le' to 'le'. I have checked with Geographical Names Board and it is definitely Brighton-Le-Sands. (See note above)

Although Brighton-Le-Sands is the official title the source of this spelling is a mystery. Usage in many sources from the early 1900's to the present, which can be verified and quoted, have "le" in the name. The 2006 telephone directory still uses "le". The form Brighton-le Sands must not be confused with BRIGHTON-LE-SANDS. Legal sources use "le" as does the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages; also the official Post Office Directories until 1932/3 and the Commonwealth Electoral Rolls until they started to use the BRIGHTON-LE-SANDS format. The school is Brighton-le-Sands, not Brighton-Le-Sands. Sydways uses the "le" form of the name.

The history section is getting too long and unweildy. It needs breaking into sub-headings to make it simpler to read- or some other format should be used, such as the use of Bold type to emphasise certain parts.User: Phayla 20 April 2007

To those of you who now doubt the legality of your birth or marriage because your certificate reads "Brighton-le-Sands", to all you family historians out there with certificates and addresses saying "Brighton-le-Sands" and to all of you with other niggling concerns about other problems, like wills, take heart. The ubiquitous form "Brighton-le-Sands" is unlikely to disappear soon although the new form of the name will slowly take ascendency in the future decades. It's a shame that you removed some of your development info from the history section, but it's your prerogative. Have you considered creating a blogspot? There's a really good one on Arncliffe that I have discovered Arncliffe blogspot. It should be noted that it seems that the "Le" form of the name was only ratified in the 1970s. This means that the alternative form is acceptable in earlier references to the topic. Lots of other name changes have occurred in the suburb as well. There are conventionl ways to manage this. For example: "They lived in Alfred Street, North Botany (now called Mascot)" or "The shop was located in Rockey Point Road, West Botany (now Princes Highway, Rockdale)." If an address in the 2006 phone book is quoted it needs to have the addres given in the book-(sic) can be put after the reference if necessary.````

Picture- Brighton Terraces, West Botany Street: look very unfamiliar for West Botany Street (can't think where they are). Also, West Botany Street is in Rockdale. They look more like terrace on The Grand Parade near Princess Street. Please check details. User: Phayla 21 April 2007

Two new Wiki sites of relevance to this entry are in their early stages of development. Early sources of data are being researched by a professional researcher; very little "second-hand" material is being used. A researcher's adage is to always check the work done by someone else to see if you can find an earlier source of the information. I am finding so much general data on the history of Rockdale as a municipality I have set up another site Municipality of Rockdale, New South Wales as a repository for this data. As much as possible data from other sites will not be duplicated (my principle for all the sites to which I am contributing). I will start to set up links as soon as I find time. What an awful site!! The syntax was woeful. I have tried to improve what was written. Moorefields racecourse was in Kogarah, not Brighton-le-Sands [before 1970] and so I have removed the reference to it.Whipstick (talk) 03:56, 14 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
