Indian citizenship[edit]

The article stated that American Indians are citizens of both the U.S. and their respective Nations. In that case, are they actually dual citizens as is commonly understood? Do those Nations issue passports and have immigration laws and such? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Jlujan69 (talk • contribs) 3 February 2006.

You misunderstood the article. In the 1830's the members decided they had moved enough, so they asked to have individual titles to their land (instead of tribal ownership of the land). The U.S. federal government ended their recognition of the tribe, and the members became citizens of the U.S. (and NOT of the tribe that no longer existed). My opinion is that was a trick played on the tribe (but I had to keep objective viewpoint for an encyclopedia. I struggled on how to word the article to made this distinction clear without presenting a point of view. Royalbroil 19:51, 3 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think the article on Dual Citizenship has some of the info Jlujan was seeking. Yes, membership in a (federally recognized) tribe constitutes a form of citizenship, although not on a par with that of an independent country. And yes, they (or at least many of them) issue official ID cards to members. No *immigration* laws, though, which they couldn't enforce.

The US also has another little known form of subordinate citizenship btw - state citizenship. Every American citizen residing in one of the 50 states is also a citizen of that state. Lewis Trondheim (talk) 13:29, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

more on the tribe's founding communities that originated around Uncasville, Connecticut
decision for the communities to be relocated to New York to form the Brothertown Indians
more details regarding the circumstances that lead to removal of the Brothertown Indians from New York to Wisconsin
more on the tribe's history from the 1831 to 1981, such as:

maintenance of identity
typical daily life
political and social relations with the US Federal government
political and social relations with Michigan Territory, Wisconsin Territory and State of Wisconsin

Hello: I am an enrolled member of the Brothertown Indians I can clear up a few pieces of information for you. Our lineage Samsom Occom left new york shortly after establishing Dartmouth college and being the first Native American graduate. I am not clear on the exact details of the treachery that had happened with the settlers and Samsom, but after that incident he left Dartmouth and our tribe started to head west. IF you look up NPR in Wisconsin, they have a series on the Brothertown Indians which could source these claims. We are made up of 7 parent tribes in the NE, with all families connect to one of the 7 parent tribes. Mine being Mohegan/Lenape. When they finally made it to Wisconsin they were indeed tired of moving and during the Indian Removal Act of I believe 1834 they were to be relocated to Kansas to be west of the Mississippi like the rest of the Native Peoples. So rather than move they were tricked into citizenship and we lost our land rights as well as our sovereign rights. We are not state or federally recognized yet, we continue petition congress for those rights. I hope this added some clarity for some of your questions. I came across this article and thought I would answer some questions and just now realizing that they were very old questions to content that needed to be added.
