Who was William Burgoyne?[edit]

A William Burgoyne is introduced, into the paragraph on the village Memorial Hall, as if the average reader would have known his importance. An indication of his position in relation to community or wider importance claim (landowner, politician, sportsman, military leader) would be appreciated.
