Question[edit]

Shouldn't this article be merged with the Gold coins article that has a bullion section ?

Information added[edit]

Start- The ISO currency code of gold bullion is XAU. ISO 4217 includes codes not only for currencies, but also for precious metals (gold, silver, palladium and platinum; by definition expressed per one troy ounce, as compared to "1 USD") and certain other entities used in international finance, e.g. Special Drawing Rights. -End. - skip sievert (talk) 15:38, 19 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The linked article on the UN created gold coin appears to be a politically motivated hoax and should be removed. The actual report referred to talks about exchange rate reform but nothing about the UN creating a gold coin. http://www.unctad.org/TEMPLATES/webflyer.asp?docid=11875&intItemID=1528&lang=1 124.170.15.227 (talk) 14:24, 24 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Maria Theresa Thaler[edit]

Shouldn't the Maria Theresa Thaler be listed as a silver bullion coin from Austria, or is there something about that coin that disqualifies it as a bullion coin?

What's the point?[edit]

Big question that's not addressed in this article: what's the point of gold bullion? If the premise is that it provides a store of value directly tied to the value of the metal it's made from, rather than the fiat value of typical currencies, then what's the benefit of investing in coin from a state mint and not just buying the metal on the open market (gold bars, etc.)?
