Untitled[edit]

Rumor has it that this railroad was financed entirely by private money, and no government subsidization was done. ?The preceding unsigned comment was added by 12.41.204.3 (talk ? contribs) 15:12, September 12, 2005.

Merge with BNSF Railway[edit]

As shown in the Kansas entity database [1], the BNSF Railway Company is technically the same company founded in 1970 as the Burlington Northern Railroad Company. The only difference, of course, is the fact that the same entity has had name changes since its buyout of the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway. Should the Burlington Northern article be absorbed into the BNSF Railway article then? In order to provide a logical continuation of railroads, I believe it should, as technically the Burlington Northern has never ceased to exist; only the usage of the Burlington Northern name and the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe have ceased to exist. In technicality, the BNSF Railway was founded in 1970. The proposed absorption of the Burlington Northern Railroad article's result would remain named BNSF Railway.KansasCity (talk) 05:20, 20 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • strong oppose - BN is not the same company as BNSF, BN is a predecessor company. BNSF was formed from the merger of BN and ATSF, both of which have their own long history. All three are treated separately in the rail industry press and should remain separate here. Slambo (Speak) 10:57, 20 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose I see no reason to merge the articles on the basis of what is essentially a trivia point. Mangoe (talk) 13:02, 20 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • strong oppose The argument that BN, BNSF and ATSF are all treated separately by the rail industry press is very persuasive. Also, if the logic of combining BN into BNSF was carried to its extreme conclusion, it would dictate that all other predecessor companies of BNSF should also be combined (Frisco, Great Northern, CB&Q, etc.) That type of consolidation serves no useful purpose and in fact would inhibit expanded coverage of predecessor companies. Cross link the BN and BNSF pages with a "Also See" section at end of page, and otherwise leave well enough alone.RI-Bill (talk) 05:31, 21 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • You are right that it wouldn't be logical to combine Frisco, Great Northern, etc. into the BNSF article if the merger was carried out because those railroads are defunct and were not the entity founded in 1970 as Burlington Northern Railroad like BNSF Railway Company was. The holding company Santa Fe Pacific Corporation was merged away into the Burlington Northern Inc., therefore BN Inc. renamed itself as Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corporation. BN & AT&SF continued to operate as separate railroads until September 22, 1995 with the new 'Pre-Heriage' Schemes found on SD70MAC's & C44-9W's. The Burlington Northern Article shouldn't be merged away with the BNSF article, as operations before BNSF were different. The same goes to the Seaboard System Railroad, as it was renamed to CSX Transportation before C&O merged with it. GT42CWR-MP (talk) 12:51, 17 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Massive data dump moved[edit]

I've moved what looks like a massive copyvio to a temporary subpage. This text looks like it was directly copy/pasted out of BN materials that are likely not public domain. For a large part of it, the referencing is only listed as page numbers without mentioning where the text is from. The information is valuable, but the text needs some massive cleanup for inclusion in this article. Slambo (Speak) 14:24, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

"Notable locomotives" sources[edit]

The majority of sources in this article are applied in the "Notable locomotives" section. About all sources listed in that section goes to a personal website and another one with user-submitted content, which is unsuitable on Wikipedia. Also, some pages in the trainpix website cited at least two publication sources. I don't own either of them, so I can't list the page numbers of the publications. These publications would be better sources for this article.TheGGoose (talk) 16:12, 10 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
