"Burnley Football Club" and the "Burnley F.C." on the list in "The Football League" article need to go to the same place.(Their website is reached via Burnleyfootballclub.com though like all league clubs it hijacks to a premiumtv.co.uk site demanding registration...when an article's written, better to have fan site links also).

I've fixed this by changing the link in this article to [[Burnley F.C.|Burnley Football Club]]. When the actual article is written at Burnley F.C. it would be worth a redirect being set up at Burnley Football Club. But of course that can't be done until there is an article to redirect to! -- sannse 15:31, 27 Sep 2003 (UTC)

To class Burnley a 'recieving a lot of attention in recent years for race riots and racial tensions' is exaggerated and an insulting simplification of the town's situation. I do not claim to have added great detail in my changes but hope that this article can be abridged and enhanced in a more intelligent and less senstionalist tone.

Added links to all of the high schools to start creating pages for them, just wondering if it is worth doing so as the schools will all be going??? (in about 5 months) --Childzy 14:49, 22 February 2006 (UTC)

Burnley having the better of the football in the post war years? you gotta be kidding

I've changed Burnley to Blackburn. It true you know! :)

Just a comment that the super school theory is not unique to Burnley. Nelson is also going through a similar process with school demolition already underway.

recent revert

  1. There are more polite ways of phrasing things than "Try reading the wikipedia articles next time you tool before deleting this section where you will find evidence of such recording locations!".
  2. Read Wikipedia:Reliable sources.
  3. I removed the section because it had no place in an encyclopaedia article.

--Cherry blossom tree 23:06, 3 June 2006 (UTC)

it does give futher information about the town and after all the aim is to enhance the readers knowledge, wjhich i feel it does.--Childzy 08:56, 4 June 2006 (UTC)
Barely. We could include a list of every street in the town, which would enhance the reader's knowledge, but it doesn't mean it would make for a good article. If you look at featured articles such as Bath and Sheffield then they don't have sections like that. The fact that someone decided to shoot part of a TV series there once doesn't really tell you anything about the place. It might be worth mentioning if it was frequently used as a location for filming, such as Holmfirth, but not just a list of shows that have shot a few scenes there. --Cherry blossom tree 09:13, 4 June 2006 (UTC)

ok good point we'll just leave it off--Childzy 10:56, 4 June 2006 (UTC)

Burnley Web

I added the site but was told I had to do it via discusion, apologies for that. My site is a non-profit community discussion forum for Burnley, Padiham and Pendle so I feel it is relevant to the town, especially if Burnley Football Club is on here which is paid organisation.

The site is www.burnleyweb.com

Many thanks.

Famous Citizens/Photos

I'm probably slightly guilty but anyone with more experience of wikipedia willing to make the list a seperate page with just a bit of prose? Also get in touch with Neal at that BurnleyWeb site for some photos of Burnley.

I've turned the list into continuous prose, weeded out one or two strays, and separated it into sections. Does anyone want to tackle some of the other issues in the WikiProject 'to do' list at the top of the page? Crac4543 18:14, 8 September 2007 (UTC)
Have now also added some photos, and cited sources as required. Just leaves Economy & Industry and an expanded Geography section. Anyone? Crac4543 17:34, 9 September 2007 (UTC)
Economy & Industry section expanded as required. I might have trouble doing Geography on my own - not my strong suit. Crac4543 17:56, 11 September 2007 (UTC)

Removal of older discussion threads

Why have the old discussion threads been removed? I thought the general consensus on Wikipedia was to leave them all until the page reached a certain size (or date?) and then put them in a talk page archive.

I'm going to revert this page in a few days if no-one has any objections. I don't see why they are removed just because they may be a few months old - plenty of talk pages keep them! Vanguard 01:04, 20 October 2007 (UTC)

Ok, I've just found this from the talk page guidelines page.
'When pages get too long: Archive — don't delete: When a talk page has become too large or a particular subject is no longer being discussed, don't delete the content — archive it. See Wikipedia:How to archive a talk page for details on why and how to.
I'm putting everything back as per the rules. Please check or ask in the future. Vanguard 01:12, 20 October 2007 (UTC)
I've created an archive sub-page which you can reach through the archive box on this page. Vanguard 01:32, 20 October 2007 (UTC)

German Army invasion plans

I remember, in the past, the article had a rather interesting bit about the town being on invasion plans for the German Army, due to its location and industrial importance? Was this correct? And is it worth putting it back into the article if it is?Bluebear89 (talk) 16:46, 20 February 2008 (UTC)

Yes, I remember that too. It was removed in the end because it lacked any kind of citation. Shame (if true). Crac4543 (talk) 08:47, 21 February 2008 (UTC)

it has some old buildings in it it also has new ones :D —Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.241.91.213 (talk) 15:13, 11 July 2008 (UTC)

Harry Palmer

In Len Deighton's book The Ipcress File, the agent comes from Burnley and is nameless. In the film he is played by Michael Caine as a Londoner and called Harry Palmer. Bandalore (talk) 13:06, 20 October 2008 (UTC)

I'm sure that's true, but possibly a bit minor to be added to the article. Maybe if we had a "Burnley in Literature" section... ? 109.148.206.182 (talk) 15:01, 1 September 2012 (UTC)

Lisa Riley

Lisa Rileys page states she was born in London - conflicting info. 92.29.118.131 (talk) 00:32, 29 July 2009 (UTC) abclaret

She was, in fact, born in Bury. 109.148.206.182 (talk) 14:46, 1 September 2012 (UTC)

Images

there are far too many images in this article so im going to take some out such as

  • roundabout - is there a need for a non-notable roundabout?
  • rowley picnic site - again not very notable nor does the picture add value
  • image looking into burnley - shows very little of burnley and lots of the road

--Childzy ¤ Talk 23:54, 18 August 2009 (UTC)

Done All images have now been trimmed and re-positioned. 109.148.206.182 (talk) 14:47, 1 September 2012 (UTC)

Governance

Burnley has three tiers of government, Burnley Borough Council and Lancashire County Council ("local"), the United Kingdom parliament ("national") and the European Parliament ("Europe").

I make that four tiers of government! Skinsmoke (talk) 06:44, 23 January 2010 (UTC)

Done The wording in that section has now been corrected. 109.148.206.182 (talk) 14:49, 1 September 2012 (UTC)

2010 update

Hi everyone,

As I’m sure some of you have noticed, I’ve moved in and redecorated! Hopefully nobody finds my tastes too offensive :-). The more I do to the page, the more I find to add, but to be honest I could do with some help. These are the things that I think should be added (in no particular order): Hospital (history + current service moving issues), Burnley Union and the workhouse, the Jail (Goal), Cavalry Barracks, Burnley in and between the Wars, Burnley Pals (WW1), ancient stuff around Worsthorne and Extwistle, Doomsday Book, Habergam Eaves, Endsleigh, The rise and fall of the BNP, history of the aeronautical industry (I’ve heard a rumour of early jet engine stuff during WW2 possibly at Lucas), Ightenhill park (the modern one and the historical one), Health???, worsted, fustian, Calico, the move from handlooms in weaver’s cottages to weaving sheds, HMS Active, why are most of the terrace houses from 1880 – 1900, how the different place names point to the various changes of control up the Norman times, how farmsteads, became manors, then villages, the districts in the town, Hotels, Banks, the Hospital Cup (football), the demise of weaving, and finally anything notable that’s happened in the last 60 years that wasn’t a riot!

Also photos!! I’ve attached a big vertical gallery to the Infobox, to make editing the text easier (and coz it looks cool – apart from the section break line running through them). It needs more and better photos, I’ve uploaded a few reasonable ones off geograph , I know we’ve got at least one photographer who could do better! I think Turf Moor (preferably hiding the old bits), the College, Hammerton St on a Saturday night (no vomit please), and something for the economy section are certainly needed.

Anyhow, don’t be afraid to pile in!

Climate chart

The source for the climate chart suggests that it's the weather for Burnley, but it's clear that the site uses the same data for other places in the area. The records and averages for Accrington, Barnoldswick, Burnley, Colne, Nelson and Settle are identical, recorded at the same place; Clitheroe and Rossendale are the same as Blackburn, all with much lower precipitation than Accrington, Burnley, etc. It's clear that the places in the databases are from a list of post towns, and without the location of where the weather was recorded, the chart may be misleading. Peter E. James (talk) 20:36, 8 April 2011 (UTC)

The data probably does come from Malham - however it is not that far out. These Burnley Coucil figures would be better apart from the fact that August is missing. It should be possible to calculate the missing figures from the Yahoo data. Or we could just have a certain IP blocked.--Trappedinburnley (talk) 20:52, 8 April 2011 (UTC)

The data definately come from malham tarn, above 400m and are a LONG WAY OUT way too cold, better remove them, worse than useless.

Because I’m too nice for my own good, I’ve looked into this a bit further. I feel that the current table is perfectly acceptable by Wikipedia standards, but agree that it is unlikely that it offers particularly accurate data. However I don’t think it should cause any offence to the average person, and certainly doesn’t need to be removed. It is a bit ridiculous to think that there would be accurate data available for an area as small as a single town, the Met. Office won’t even go below NW England. After creating this chart based on Burnley council’s data, I see another sizeable issue with it. The data is for a single year (and a noticeably dry one at that), not a multi-year average. It does show that November (Which I don’t remember as a record-breaking month) had a precipitation figure pretty close to the existing data.

I’ve been able to find one other site that offers a different data set, however it also looks like it just uses the data from the nearest station. Who’s to say it is more accurate that the Yahoo data which comes from weather.com? The only other solution I can see is to replace it with a north west England chart instead, but that would not be the standard way of doing things.

I just can’t be bothered to spend any more time on this, if some else can, feel free. --Trappedinburnley (talk) 10:11, 9 April 2011 (UTC)
