Untitled[edit]

I reworked the article and removed a lot of the "work needed" tags because the article is now more or less neutral. It could use a larger reference section, but most of it is clearly pretty clearly stated in the legal document attached. That the Chippewa and Ottawa of this region are the same might be an assumption. It either needs to be clarified, referenced, or erased.Editfromwithout (talk) 19:05, 29 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Status[edit]

It's difficult to prove a negative, since Burt Lake Band isn't going to say they are unrecognized on their website; however, the National Congress of American Indians publishes an online tribal directory of all state and federal recognized tribes, and the link shows that, while the "Burns Paiute Tribe" is listed, the Burt Lake Band is not listed. The National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) is a voluntary membership organization, which tribes can choose to sign up and pay for. Only tribes that have chosen to be NCAI members are listed on their page. Thus NCAI does not define or determine the recognition status of tribes. It is best to go with the strongest evidence, which happens to be the Michigan Indian Directory. Again NCAI does not determine state-recognition or only list their member tribes. The directory was published three years ago. Why doesn't the government of Michigan discuss the Burt Lake Band elsewhere on its Michigan's Tribal Governments website? Michigan's department of Native American Services DOES mention its state historic tribes on its home page Michigan Native American Services Website. An absence of current information does not mean that the tribe has been terminated or removed of its status.
