Bye Week Where did this term originate?

That's what I want to know. Anyone have any imput on where this term came from or where it originated?

I really would like to know as well. Because they say "bye" to the other competitors and go home during that week or event? That seems ridiculous. I'll ask on the help desk if no one pops up with an answer here. Thedoorhinge 02:00, 30 September 2006 (UTC)

Merge

The section in the Single-elimination tournament#Byes is concise. The only purpose I can see for this page is to disambiguate the term "bye", in it's long-standing tournament sense, from the NFL corruption "bye week", which should really be called a "scheduled off week". It seems simple enough to do this, but the content on this page is nothing but a confused mess, with the bulk of it essentially a (really bad) reproduction of what is already on the other page. Something needs to be done to merge the explanations of the terms: providing lame summaries and examples of a topic which is already (far) better presented on another page is kind of pointless. Perhaps the cleanest solution: turn this into a disambiguation page, listing the Cricket sense of the term (completely different), the NFL regular season sense ("bye week"), and the tournament sense of the term. Disambiguating the term in these (at least) three distinct senses would provide some value -- providing duplicate explanations and example lists really does not provide much. At a minimum, there should be at least three distinct sections to this article (Cricket, "bye week", and "tournament bye") with appropriate links to the main content for each sense of the term and a concise explanation as to how the term differs in each context. Bi Week Redirect

Should "Bi Week" redirect to this article? I think most people using "Bi" specifically instead of "Bye" are probably more likely looking for Bisexual Awareness Week, rather than an article on a sports term. It seems unlikely that someone would misspell "Bye Week" as "Bi Week" as well. I'm not sure what sort of procedure or protocol there is to request a redirect change, but I think "Bi Week" should lead to Bisexual Awareness Week 69.168.167.192 (talk) 01:36, 20 September 2019 (UTC)

Needs to be updated

Outdated or is not correct, there are 2 byes for one team if the team is the number one seed in the postseason and the other bye will be scheduled.
