Pictures[edit]

I removed a few of photos that seemed inappropriate for the article. The "Lake Cadillac" picture was deleted simply because that section of an article is traditionally reserved for a picture of the "cityscape." The photo I originally placed there (and have replaced) was the closest picture of Cadillac's cityscape that I could find without breaching any copyright laws. For the other two, the reasoning was that the focus of this article is on the city of Cadillac and the pictures centered less on the city itself and more on a particular individual. The were good photos, though.

What's with the weird pic of the Masonic building? I live two blocks from it and could probably get a better shot of it, but there are other landmarks here that are more deserving of a picture than that building. A Runyon 06:19, 2 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I agree. Feel free to take the photo off. If you could replace it with a better pic of the downtown I think that would be great. If I ever get around to taking a picture I'll do it myself. Max, 12 January 2007

Flat-landers vs. Down-staters[edit]

I changed "flat-landers" back to "down-staters" because I am under the impression that the general consensus is that southern Michiganders are termed as "down-staters" by northern Michiganders. Moreover, the term "flat-landers" is a term that (as I am aware) refers to Midwesterners in general, and in particularly those from the states like Kansas and Iowa.

--Max 21:21, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I grew up in Cadillac and never heard ANY of those expressions to refer to anybody. Also, if it is something that *Northern Michiganians* say as opposed to just Cadillac, I think that the article should clearly state that these are regional colloquialisms and not specifically used by residence of Cadillac. I'm tempted to say that I'd like to see some sort of documentation that they are in common usage.
Please sign your name when you post. Unfortunately, I do not think that any anthropoligsts have performed studies as of late of the colloquialisms of any northern Michiganders. I will delete the reference entirely. Max 23 May 2007 (UTC)
I have again deleted the reference to "flatlanders." Max 31 August 2007 (UTC)

Some gentle suggestions for further thought, and congratulations[edit]

Congratulations. I note that you've got a great article here, and there are lots of things I intend to borrow for other towns in Michigan.

FYI, I just put in a reference to Northern Michigan which I think ties in nicely to your article. As you evidently have many contributors, I am formally inviting your thought and contributions to it.

Additionally, you have a lot of sections that I want to emulate elsewhere (plagiarism is the sincerest form of flattery).

Nevertheless, I would mention that if you look at Traverse City, Michigan, Alpena, Michigan, Grayling, Michigan, Oscoda, Michigan and Harrisville, Michigan (just to name a few) you might find some sections that would be worth emulating (e.g, recurrent events).

I'll be back and play with your highways, as I think that you need a special section on that. Alternatively, one of you could probably cut and paste form the highway section of Northern Michigan and get something that would be visually more satisfying, and contain more information as to where the main thorougfares go.

As i don't want to get out of sync with your good work and great project, I'll leave it to you all to carry on.

Happy new year to you all. 7&6=thirteen (talk) 20:10, 2 January 2008 (UTC)Stan[reply]

Consequential Edits[edit]

I'm going to slightly edit the mentioning of Northern Michigan, since it is not (directly) relevant to this article to mention that Wexford County is part of Northern Michigan. It will just read that Cadillac is part of Northern Michigan.

I've now added in some small images (Flags for sister-cities, shields for highways). The weather spreadsheet has been updated and cleaned-up, and one of the images has been moved and resized.

Yes, I think we could revise the details about the highways. What about adding a Topography section under Geography and placing the relevant geographic information under that? Then, what is left over should be the highways details. To address this issue, we could add a section on Transportation, under which the main thoroughfares could be listed. What do you think?

I like you enthusiasm. Nice job. I also trust your judgment, and am truly an outsider.
I just got caught up in this geography thing.
I just did that in West Michigan, the Thumb, Mid-Michigan, I think. I imagine you've already looked at Northern Michigan. I also did a bunch of towns Manistee, Michigan, Alpena, Michigan, Gaylord, Michigan, Grayling, Michigan, Traverse City, Michigan, Oscoda, Michigan, Tawas City, Michigan, East Tawas, Michigan, most of the eaastern side along Lake Huron. These are all starting to run together . . .
Anyway, given the geography of the particular towns, etc, or the territory, and what was already in the articles, I kind of adapted and tried various methods.
IMHO, there is not one best way to do this. You adopt the available methods and form to fit the subject matter.
You seem to be very adept at doing that. 7&6=thirteen (talk) 22:24, 4 January 2008 (UTC)Stan[reply]

Best of luck. 7&6=thirteen (talk) 22:24, 4 January 2008 (UTC)Stan[reply]

Radio stations[edit]

I tried doing a multi column on the radio stations. If you don't like it, feel free to revert the edit. 7&6=thirteen (talk) 22:38, 4 January 2008 (UTC)Stan[reply]

The other way to do this would be to break it into an AM and an FM column. All one would have to do (I think) is get rid of hte {{multicol-break)) at the end of the second column. 7&6=thirteen (talk) 22:42, 4 January 2008 (UTC)Stan[reply]
It will be left as it as it is for now. Your suggestion to make an AM and FM column sounds good. As I keep adding references, then I suspect we will need to split that section into two columns, so then the article might flow better for the eye with two two-column sections. Max 10:56, 5 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
After looking over the page a number of times, I changed the formating of the Radio subsection. It flows better with just two columns. I would have liked to have left the AM and FM columns separate, but having those subsections jumbles up the content bar. I think its important that these articles maintain a simple and streamlined appearance. Max 20:32 5 January 2008 (UTC)

Minor Edits[edit]

I deleted the line "Cadillac is the birthplace of American filmmaker Ryan A. Lough." It was out of place and I do not think this guy is "notable" enough to start a notable residents section for him. But that is not just for me to judge.

GA Review[edit]

This review is transcluded from Talk:Cadillac, Michigan/GA1. The edit link for this section can be used to add comments to the review.

Hi there. Great work expanding this article! There are a few areas that need some work with citations and prose, many of which I tagged directly in the text. There are a few areas where I cannot find facts from the article in the source provided. Please check those as well. Other comments are outlined below.

General[edit]

  • Make sure your section headings and order follow the guidelines at WP:USCITY.
  • All ciatations should have titles, publishers and access dates. References 25 and 45 seem to have issues.
  • You may want to remove the dead Wikilinks (also known as "red links"). Please see the editing guideline at Wikipedia:Red link.

Lead[edit]

  • "Approximately five miles north-northwest of Cadillac lies the geographic center of Michigan." Subject/verb problems...five miles north-northwest doesn't "lie" anywhere. Better: "The geographic center of Michigan is approximately five miles north-northwest of Cadillac." Make sure to also translate mileage into km... you can do so using Template:Convert.
  • "Cadillac became the county seat after the so-called "Battle of Manton," in which a show of force was involved in enforcing a controversial decision to move the county seat from Manton, Michigan." What kind of show of force? The lead is short enough that you can add additional details... I don't say this too often, but you can probably add an extra sentence or two to the lead so that it accurately summarizes the entire article.

History[edit]

  • Battle of Manton: You could give a little more background here.
    • Why were the residents feuding in the first place?
    • If the dispute over the county seat was between Cadillac and Sherman, why was the sheriff from Manton involved?
  • Sister cities:
    • Flags aren't typically placed in the text. If you would like, you may certainly include another section with a list of Cadillac's sister cities.
    • Why are the sister cities here? I think you mean to say that the city has a special relationship with towns in Scandinavia, since that's where a large portion of the town's population comes from. However, that information needs to be sourced and is better placed in the demographics section, not history.
  • Why is the "Cadillac Club" important?
  • The paragraphs about the economy and "Caberfae Ski Area" belong in the economy section or a new section on parks and recreation, not history.
  • Why is that information about the gas station and the caged bear important?
  • Neat info about Kiss
  • The "Historic landmarks" section can be in it owns section.

Demographics[edit]

  • The page cited is just a home page. Even if the data does come from the Census bureau, you have to provide a direct link to the specific piece of data. Even though the information is no-doubt correct, it's important to know exactly where the data comes from so that in the future it can be easily updated.

Colleges[edit]

  • This section really should be about education in general, which includes K-12 schools.

Transportation[edit]

  • The information about the trail might be best suited for another section about parks and recreation, where you can also include information about the skiing areas.

Local media[edit]

  • Wikipedia tends to shy away from lists like this. Is there anything else notable that you can say about the media? How large is the circulation of The Cadillac News? How often does it run? Is it owned by a larger conglomerate or is it still independent? What major media market is the city a part of? (Nielsen data would work here).

Ok. Well the article is off to a great start, but is not quite up to GA standards yet. The article will fail for now, but I hope you can renominate once the issues above are resolved. Please let me know if I can help out. Best, epicAdam (talk) 19:48, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Lou Gehrig's[edit]

I deleted the part about there being an epidemic of inbreeding happening in Cadillac, The report is unsubstantiated and ridiculous to even be in the article. If Ryan A. Lough isn't notable enough then a bull shit report isn't worthy either.
