Added John Muir National Historic Site as one, which is directly off the Alhambra Avenue exit in Martinez. --Geopgeop 23:08, 22 September 2005 (UTC)

Alternate Routes

Cummings Skyway from Route 4 West is a signed alternate route to Interstate 80 East, and vice versa (actually, from Interstate 80 West, this is the official exit to Route 4, there is no access in Route 4's own interchange from I-80 West). There are other alternate routes as well. Route 4 shares part of Franklin Canyon Road from Hercules to Martinez (the route used to be on all of the road until the partial freeway was built parallel to it). Also, I believe Muir Road in Martinez from Center Avenue to Pacheco Boulevard is an alternate. I don't know about Arnold Drive/Industrial Way/Plaza though. --Geopgeop 10:30, 5 October 2005 (UTC)

Brentwood bypass

A freeway extension bypassing Oakley and Brentwood is under construction, running from the 160 junction to Marsh Creek/Vasco roads...Ranma9617 06:56, 27 January 2006 (UTC)

Here's a link with some info on this bypass: http://www.sr4bypass.org/ --Geopgeop 22:09, 7 April 2006 (UTC)

This bypass has been built in three sections, and has been named the John Marsh Heritage Highway. As of 2009, all sections are open to traffic. Only the portion from I-160 to Lone Tree Way interchange is a multi-lane freeway. The portions from Lone Tree to Vasco Road are single-lane each way and have signal-controlled grade crossings at Sand Creek Road, Balfour Road and Marsh Creek Road.Bruin2 (talk) 00:47, 2 August 2010 (UTC) 24.4.49.77 (talk) 15:32, 24 September 2009 (UTC)

It should be noted that the "bypass" does not reconnect to SR 4 east of Brentwood. Eastbound motorists wishing to reconnect to SR 4 must take any of the exits listed above and follow the surface street to Main Street (Oakley) or Brentwood Blvd. (Brentwood).24.4.49.77 (talk) 15:32, 24 September 2009 (UTC)

The westbound bypass highway does not connect directly to SR 160. 24.4.49.77 (talk) 15:32, 24 September 2009 (UTC)

Major junctions

I believe that the junction with SR-160 in Antioch is major as that highway crosses over the Antioch Bridge. --Geopgeop 17:22, 27 March 2006 (UTC)

The major junctions table becomes confusing and misleading for the highway between the SR 160 junction and Stockton. As noted under Brentwood bypass on this page, the bypass does not reconnect to the main SR 4 east of Brentwood. Instead, it becomes an extension of Vasco Road, the principal route to Livermore, California. Vasco Road does not have a California highway number. The old SR 4 is a city street (Main St. in Oakley and Brentwood Blvd. in Brentwood). Laurel Road, Lone Tree Way, Sand Creek Road and Balfour Road are also major intersections on this street. I'm not sure how the table should be modified to clear up any confusion caused by this anomaly.24.4.49.77 (talk) 15:53, 24 September 2009 (UTC)

These comments have been overtaken by events when CalTrans officially took responsibility for the Bypass Road and renamed it as part of SR-4. The old SR-4 through Oakley and Brentwood reverted to city-controlled streets. The main intersection table has been corrected to reflect this change. In effect, SR-160 has been extended south to the former bypass interchange. Bruin2 (talk) 16:36, 12 February 2012 (UTC)
