This article is written in Canadian English, which has its own spelling conventions (colour, centre, travelled, realize, analyze) and some terms that are used in it may be different or absent from other varieties of English. According to the relevant style guide, this should not be changed without broad consensus.

Accuracy[edit]

Surely this is more than an online database only. That doesn't seem plausible. I added the accuracy disputed tag. This should be resolved by any editors who are around here (if any). Thanks. IvoShandor 07:43, 23 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Its own profile says that's pretty much what it is: an online honor roll and database. As far as I know, there are no plaques erected for Register sites. A listing should not be confused with a National Historic Site. Yoho2001 06:56, 24 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I removed the tag, though it seems that describing it primarily as an online database may not be the proper descriptor, despite that being on the website. Poking around there it seems that there is a bit more to it than just being a database, but I see it wasn't created until 1999, interesting. IvoShandor 11:55, 24 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Also I am highly intrigued by this. I wonder if WikiProject National Register of Historic Places would have enough interest for a Canadian Register division. With only 3,000 listings it would actually be a feasible goal to complete wiki entries on each one of those places, as the U.S. Register makes that a daunting activity with some 80,000 individual listings and 900,000+ individual properties (including those in historic districts), though we are working hard at it. I don't know if any of our current members are Canucks but I am sure there might be some interest.... What do you think? IvoShandor 11:59, 24 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi all, I'm going to clarify some of the content here. Yes, the Canadian Register is, more or less, an online database. Technically, it is a register of registers: a register of provincial, territorial and federal databases, each of which submit records to the Canadian Register. It is quite purposefully NOT also known as the National Register (this is the American version) so I'm removing references to that. --Dalejarvis 13:36, 18 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Usage in articles[edit]

I notice that in a number of articles, one sees a reference along the lines of "Historic Site XYZ is listed on the Canadian Register of Historic Places", usually accompanied by an inline reference linking to the CRHP website. We should replace all such references whenever we see them. Further to the discussion above, inclusion in the CRHP is not a heritage/historic designation - the CRHP is merely a directory of sites throughout Canada that have been designated under various heritage statutes and programs. For example, Guelph City Hall is notable, in part, because it is designated a National Historic Site of Canada and is also designated under the Ontario Heritage Act. The city hall is listed in the CRHP because of those two designations -- inclusion in the CRHP does not add any additional notability or significance to the building. In this way, the Canadian register differs significantly from the American National Register of Historic Places.

For these reasons, and to continue with the example I was using, the Guelph City Hall article should mention the building's status as a NHSC and its designation under the Ontario Heritage Act. The CRHP is a tremendous resource and should be used in the article references as a reliable source to provide evidence of the two heritage designations, but the CRHP itself need not be mentioned in the body of the article. --Skeezix1000 (talk) 18:15, 9 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

CRHP template[edit]

The CRHP recently revamped its website, and in the course of doing so changed the format of the urls for each of its listings. As a result, all the links on Wikipedia to the CRHP all ceased to function overnight.

To facilitate inserting links to CRHP listings in article references, I have created the {{CRHP}} template. An explanation of its usage is found on the template page. The template makes it somewhat easier to link to CRHP references. More importantly, should the CRHP ever be revamped again, thus again making deadlinks out of all CRHP links on Wikipedia, we should only have to quickly fix the CRHP template to put everything right, rather than fixing hundreds of articles. --Skeezix1000 (talk) 18:21, 9 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
