Beefart says: There seems to be an element of politikal korrektniz creeping in here. It is true that "people" were forced onto the Flats in the 50s and 60s but those who are unfamilaiar with the times may not realize that All of them belonged to racial groups that the Government of the time- and I repeat that phrase so that nobody will misunderstand me- deemed to be "non white". Why be squeamish about this now? We cannot change history. Apartheid was more than 20 years ago. There are bright young scholars of the new generation all around the world who did not grow up with it. Unless we "tell it like it was", they won't know. How do we deal with this one?

  • Beefart, my previous edits were based on efforts to streamline the intro, and I've tried to redo the intro to reflect your concerns--I agree that the nature of the development of the area must not be de-racialized, for that is at the heart of its creation. Beefart replies: Excellent job....

Yep, tell it like it is. But about the the stories how non cape residents are/were being brought in by the ANC for the elections? Weren't the cape flats their main residence? As I understand it, these folks are now living in the squats along the n2 from the flats all the way up to the airport. Anyone got any more info on this?

Neutralised[edit]

I've done some minor changes that neutralise some of the more seemingly-biased sentences, but have left everything intact. Please comment if you have any further suggestions and/or criticisms.

Category slums[edit]

Should this category be set?Sarcelles (talk) 15:52, 29 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Why is this page also the header for Lavender Hill?[edit]

Why has this page been made the main title page of this page? Lavender Hill is a suburb within the Cape Flats and as such it should have a page of its own.--Discott (talk) 09:15, 25 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Presumably because nobody has created the article (beyond a redirect) yet. Yes, Lavender Hill is a suburb, and should have it's own article - feel free to start one :) Greenman (talk) 21:13, 25 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Geographical extent of the Cape Flats[edit]

Looking for a reliable source to say where the Cape Flats starts and ends.

  • I don't think anyone would dispute the southern boundary at the north shore of False Bay.
  • Western boundary based on catchment area from the east? East of the Liesbeek/Black/Salt river and Diep River (South)/Zandvlei?
  • Northern boundary would be south of Voortrekker road/old Main Road to Somerset West, probably south of the railway line from the city bowl to Somerset West, but it is not clear how far north and east the sands and wetlands originally extended.
  • Eastern boundary, somewhere around Macassar? West of the Lourens River? West of Paardevlei? West of the Eerste River?

Not concerned about the political/minicipal designation of suburbs of the Cape Flats, which is relatively clear. Cheers, · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 12:10, 2 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
