Developmental origins, please! Madskile (talk) 07:03, 16 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This is a tricky one to find info on. I've drawn and added a diagram of lens development which only answers the question indirectly. Implicit in the drawing is that the capsule is a basement membrane that encompasses and attaches to two different cell morphologies, lens fiber cell ends and lens epithelial cells. It makes sense that it developed at least partly from these cells but I couldn't find a reference for this. Photographs of the fully formed capsule I've also added to the article indicate it could also be laid down by a cells exterior to the lens, on the capsule surface. The origins of these cells is likely to be the ciliary body so this could also be considered a possible developmental origin for the capsule.
So the request for development origins to be included in this article is not a simple one. Developmental origins typically refers to cell types differentiating from one type to another. In this case we are not referring to a cell, but rather extracellular matrix. The matrix does not originate from one cell type, in this case it is secreted by thousands of cells in varying states of development. These cells could be from the lens and/or the ciliary body. Maybe I'll add text to this effect to the main article as well if it doesn't make it too confusing. Tgru001 (talk) 03:51, 11 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
