"We still have to deepen our investigation, verify and confirm (the findings) through new witness testimony, but according to what we have established so far, it is at the moment opponents of the regime who are using sarin gas," she added.

ICTY activity dating back to 1999[edit]

Can somebody throw light on one particular overlooked fact: Del Ponte became prosecutor at ICTY in 1999. The ICTY is a UN product and subsequently its personnel (judge, jury, preosecutors, security officers, clerks, translators et al) are deployed by the participating governments, appointed by their foreign offices. Del Ponte is Swiss and prior to 2002, Switzerland was not a member of the UN. Del Ponte was at all times paid the Swiss tax payer but in 1999, the country had no representation in the UN as this was a period when it boasted neutrality.
