Missed shot[edit]

(moved from my Talk page)--Bbb23 (talk) 01:31, 8 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Why must her miss of a penalty kick be included? Why is this necessary information? If you believe it to be so necessary, why have you not added the pK misses to both Shannon Boxx and Tobin Heath's pages? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Anc07 (talkcontribs) 02:39, 7 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It was a crucial moment in the World cup and you are 100% free to add it (and source it) to the other players pages. It does NOT change the fact that she DID MISS the PK, and the game was won by Japan. It is a 100% true, factual statement. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.169.87.36 (talk) 17:28, 7 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I still do not think it is crucial player info. Everyone misses pK's and by adding this to her bio, you are partially defining her career by it, which I think is unnecessary. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Anc07 (talkcontribs) 19:38, 7 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I also think it's not necessary for her player bio. The pK miss is not what lost the game for the US, but placing this information in her bio makes it seem to the uninformed football population that the loss of the game was her fault. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 151.213.116.100 (talk) 19:41, 7 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I'm going to leave the sentence about her missing the shot out until a consensus has been reached.--Bbb23 (talk) 01:32, 8 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Interesting points raised, but in my opinion i don't believe anyone is placing blame on her for losing the game, rather, it's tied in (with sourcing it appears) to the outcome. Perhaps re-wording the information. I think it's an important part of the world cup story. — Preceding unsigned comment added by CESQ7 (talkcontribs) 02:18, 8 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I simply believe it should be left out. Should anyone care to know detailed specifics, they can go to the USWNT page and/or read the sourced material. I reiterate, that saying she missed the pK in the manner that has been done so implies it was her fault — Preceding unsigned comment added by 151.213.116.100 (talk) 06:06, 8 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Because it was a World Cup final, I don't think it can be left out. That's not to disparage Lloyd - everybody knows penalty shoot outs are a lottery and she had the courage to step up and take one under all that pressure. It's something that can happen to even the best players. Compare Roberto Baggio and Franco Baresi who famously missed in the WC94 final. If the Lloyd article is deficient of this information, we are presenting a one-eyed view and the encyclopedia suffers. Clavdia chauchat (talk) 08:36, 8 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I am proud to be one of Carli Lloyd’s biggest fans. I have been following her and USWNT for years, experiencing all the ups and downs, especially twice the euphoria that she brought by two Olympic gold medals as well as the great pity that they were just one tiny step away from the championship of the World Cup. She is more than a phenomenal play, but truly a player of a kind, who really brought women’s football/soccer to a whole new level. In fact on my radar I still have not yet spotted any other female football/soccer player among the youngsters who resembles her unique technique and playing style. Therefore the women’s football/soccer fields would have really lost a shine if she has ever retired. Nevertheless, I strongly believe that we ought to mention the fact that she missed one PK in the WWC 2011 final. That is because it is totally NOT a shame at all which her fans need to cover – it was purely bad luck. Just think about it this way: not many people have the chance to participate in the World Cup; not all of those who participated in the World Cup had the chance to step on the field to actually play; few of those mentioned above would have the chance to play in the final; moreover, rarely did the World Cup finals end up with penalty kicks; furthermore, the majority of those who really had the luck to play in the World Cup final which was wound up with penalty kicks did not ever step up to the penalty spot: only a handful of players from each team had such a chance, while others waited aside; therefore, only few of the few can proudly say that they once took a penalty kick during the PKs of a World Cup final. Well, that’s still not the end: amongst those handful luckiest ones only the very minority would have missed the kick. In conclusion, the fact of taking the penal kick itself is a great honour to any players, no matter what the result comes. Carli Lloyd’s missing the net was pitiful indeed, but that only serves as a piece of interesting trivia which helps people to remember her – not in a bad way. From a historical point of view, because of her contribution she will be better remembered than those who found the back of net during the PKs. Full stop. So, this time I am going to put the information on the page. Please forgive me, Carli Lloyd, if you are ever reading this. All other people: please take an objective and calm approach to this trivia. Thank you all!! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Symnodas (talkcontribs) 12:37, 17 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Urgent point[edit]

This article say "She is the only woman in history to score the game-winning goal in two separate Olympic gold medal matches; her first occurred during the Beijing 2008 final against Brazil." ..... but the first source says she is the only person! We have a DYK hook that is based on this very point. I think it is important that we get this right! Please ping me if you need help correcting an error. Photos with 2015 kit[edit]

Not sure if these fit in the current format of the article, however, here they are a few to pick from if you want to add one. Noah 01:18, 23 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I like the second one (or the first one) -- AstroU (talk) 01:11, 24 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I like the first one, since an action shot -- better yet, one with a ball -- seems more appealing than one with her just jogging across the field. -DKMell (talk) 20:40, 12 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Category[edit]

Is there a reason why she is not in Category:FIFA Women's World Cup-winning captains? She was the captain in the 2015 final. Mobile mundo (talk) 22:14, 18 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I've added the category in - the article certainly says that and the other articles in the category have won the World Cups as well. Iggy (Swan) 22:14, 20 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

goal total[edit]

On June 10 USsoccer.com lists Carli as having 110 goals[1]. She has 3 in the first 2 games of World Cup so she has 113 now. Her goal list shows her having 108 as the start of the World Cup. I think we should go with US soccer's total.Tomrtn (talk) 03:03, 17 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

added mising 2 goals from game on May 16, 2019 vs  New Zealand total is now 113 list completeTomrtn (talk) 12:50, 17 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

2016 Olympics[edit]

You could be forgiven for thinking that the 2016 Summer Olympics didn't happen by reading the article as is: why is there no mention of it in the section on her international career? Only mention of 2016 is in the intro, in parentheses, and in her goal list.

College years[edit]

So, it seems like the section about Rutgers is potentially slightly inaccurate? According to the Rutgers page on her she played from the 2001 season to the 2004 season. However, having started in college in (presumably) fall 2001, she most likely actually graduated in the spring of 2005, unless she graduated early. The same is true for her high school years. If she started high school in 1997 she'd graduate in 2001 (barring early graduation).
