Introduction[edit]

"His style of comedy is often political and involves issues of race, culture, and social class, juxtaposing existing social issues with ethical convention."

Call me cynical, but either someone's reading too much into it, or he wrote it himself.

Does anyone else think this line should go? 195.137.93.129 (talk) 02:47, 11 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I completely agree. 69.24.112.147 (talk) 19:27, 16 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I agree too. Ten bucks says Ned Holness wrote it himself, like many of his Urban Dictionary entries. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.71.172.11 (talk) 12:20, 7 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Good grief...[edit]

This article is a shining example of why Wikipedia is the most unreliable piece of crap ever. I used to edit, but got tired of dealing with insanely biased editors. People, concerning his name Ned Holness, it's all over the internet. I found tons of sources for that. Seeing as how his name has been locked on this page to be Ned Mencia is rampant bias and again, is a great example of the unreliablity of wikipedia. Either change it to Ned Holness, or don't be surprised when people continue to view Wikipedia as a joke. 63.81.133.153 (talk) 16:00, 16 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Please list one reliable source and it'll be changed. DonQuixote (talk) 03:01, 17 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Here's a youtube video clip of Ned talking about his real name and stage name... his name is Ned Holness. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dnr67Giq-LE — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.108.12.99 (talk) 07:07, 26 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The Holness Surname, Ned, Carlos, and Reality[edit]

The surname or family name of Holness is a common German last name. The person calling himself Carlos Mencia is actually named Ned Holness, a classic Germanic name. He is neither a Mencia, nor a Mexican, and a dubious Latino at best. He is as German as sauerkraut and apple strudel. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Tomcat2000 000 (talkcontribs) 23:29, 6 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

As has been pointed out by others, Holness is an English name [1]. But then again, that's all irrelavent since his mother (whose name is Mencia) is Mexican. That makes him Mexican. Do some research, please, before throwing around things that you heard via gossip. DonQuixote (talk) 01:42, 8 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

If Mencia is his mother's maiden name, why is it used in the article? What does his birth certificate say? I suggest we should use Holness as his last name in the article unless it can be proven that Mencia is in fact his legal birth name. You say do some research, but where exactly are YOUR references that his mother is in fact Mexican? We can throw around what we think to be true all day, but that will only feed into the stereotype of Wikipedia. I ask anyone with the time to find actual REFERENCES.66.20.173.231 (talk) 07:32, 16 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Follow the citation links within the article. DonQuixote (talk) 12:16, 16 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Though I don't have access to his birth certificate I can say with certainty his mother is actually Honduran, and his birth name was Holness. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.151.241.56 (talk) 22:08, 19 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

http://msgboard.snopes.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=30;t=002628;p=0 Mencia's own site is quoted as being the source of information in regards to his real name. Change it to Ned Holness. 108.18.96.170 (talk) 09:11, 22 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

A forum isn't a reliable source. Notwithstanding, Mencia's site, which is referred to in the forum postings, says his real name is Ned Mencia and that he went by Ned Holness for a period of time...which is already mentioned in this article. Please learn to read. DonQuixote (talk) 14:49, 22 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Scientology[edit]

Why is this part of Wikiproject Scientology? Is he a scientologist? There's no mention of it in the article. -- OlEnglish (Talk) 18:17, 31 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Someone felt that, since he criticized Scientology, he be included in that project. I don't know who it was and I don't know what Wikiproject Scientology's goals are, so I can't really say anything more than that. DonQuixote (talk) 17:47, 2 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
That makes about as much sense as Newt Gingrich being added to the Barack Obama wikiproject. LOL Dachande (talk) 17:49, 12 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Cancellation of show[edit]

In fairness to Carlos' fans, this biography needs to contain an accurate statement of why his show on Comedy Central was cancelled in 2008. As late as July 2009, Comedy Central was still playing reruns of his show. —Preceding unsigned comment added by ArtisticVani (talkcontribs) 07:04, 17 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Because He Stole jokes they finally kicked him off the network. It was on the comedy central website last month. They aren't going to be showing reruns anymore either. Also why would you use wikipedia to find out information? This site is a joke. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.214.88.91 (talk) 06:01, 1 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

that must be why you use it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 217.191.2.32 (talk) 18:41, 1 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
OOO! OWNED! Over a year later.129.139.1.68 (talk) 19:34, 8 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Ned Mencia[edit]

It now says Carlos was born as Ned Mencia, I was fairly sure he was born as Ned Holness... —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.109.58.222 (talk) 03:22, 29 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

And what's the source of your information? DonQuixote (talk) 04:02, 29 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

South Park[edit]

Someone update on how Carlos reacted to the episode Fishsticks. That episode attacked him for stealing jokes and him getting killed by Kanye West. AnthonyTheGamer (talk) 19:56, 8 May 2011 (UTC) AnthonyTheGamer[reply]

Additions to the "Accusations of Plagiarism" section.[edit]

In the movie "I Am Comic", Carlos admits to stealing jokes, saying it's "like sampling", and that he "just say[s] Mexican in the front." I feel like that is kind of an important piece of information.

Better photo?[edit]

Here's another PD photo from the USAF, as found on this site. What does anyone think compared to the existing photo?RadioKAOS (talk) 23:01, 21 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Carlos Mencia: accusations of plagarism[edit]

on the Carlos Mencia page, at the end of "Accusations of plagarism" section, I think you should add:

Despite all the accusations, numerous comics that used to tour with Mencia (Jo Koy, Pablo Francisco, Brad Williams, among others) have defended him saying that the rumors aren't true and that Carlos writes all his own material.

74.106.224.155 (talk) 06:15, 16 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Not done: please provide reliable sources that support the change you want to be made. Bmusician 09:24, 16 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

No because now its 2013 - 6 years later and he is off the radar, joe rogan is still doing his thing, as are all the others who are not charlatans.

"Biological father"[edit]

The phrase "biological father" implies that he was raised by a stepfather. Is that the case? Varlaam (talk) 16:54, 17 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

As mentioned in the article, he was raised by his aunt and uncle. He went into this in great detail on an episode of The Adam Carolla podcast if someone wants to dig it up.108.192.6.73 (talk) 23:38, 17 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Weight Loss[edit]

I think Carlos Mencia's very public loss of weight should be included in the article. The reason I came to his page was information on it and found it glaringly absent. 108.192.6.73 (talk) 23:36, 17 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

All the fat comments on the YouTube got to him and he started stealing adderall i read it in the NYTimes. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.108.12.99 (talk) 07:10, 26 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

By any chance can we get a link to that? Hamsterlopithecus (talk) 21:55, 13 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Updated references to Joe Rogan's blog[edit]

In the References section, the links to Joe Rogan's blog are incorrect since Joe Rogan's web site structure changed. The references with title "Carlos Mencia is a weak minded joke thief." should actually link to:

http://joerogan.net/blog/carlos-mencia-is-a-weak-minded-joke-thief

References 14 and 17 both currently point to the same incorrect destination (although #17 omits the trailing full stop, which should be included). Those references should probably be merged. Encourage (talk) 12:00, 24 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Semi-protected edit request on 18 January 2014[edit]

Footnote 7 and the related line 'Carlos Mencia is currently on a 2011 stand up comedy tour, including dates at the Improv in Schaumburg, IL on June 24 and 25, and ending in Las Vegas at Treasure Island on Friday, September 16, 2011' are irrelevant and should be deleted. 70.241.21.176 (talk) 02:47, 18 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Partly done: I changed it to past tense ("Carlos Mencia went on..."), but I didn't remove it. --Anon126 (talk - contribs) 05:35, 18 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

His name(s)[edit]

His name seems to be a topic of interest and debate, even among editors. I propose that we create a small section in the article clarifying/compiling everything we know about his name(s) and name changes through the years as well as detailing the controversy itself. This would help readers (and editors) quickly get up to speed about everything we know. But we really need to make sure that we have reliable sources for anything we say as this is a Biography of a Living Person. This is what we have so far (please correct me if I'm wrong):

  • He was born Ned Arnel Mencia (this allegedly appears on his birth certificate). He took his mother's last name, Mencia, because she was upset at his father at the time of his birth. His father's name is Roberto Holness so Ned was known throughout his school years as Ned Holness. Ned claims that other comedians knew about his name and that he did not try to hide it. All of this is told by Ned himself, so it's not as reliable as we would want (WP:Primary) but it's what we have. [2][3]
  • I've heard pretty consistently that Mitzi Shore, the owner of The Comedy Store, suggested/gave him the stage-name Carlos Mencia. The reason usually cited is that it would give him a much greater appeal with the hispanic/mexican crowd. I heard this being said on a radio interview but I'm having trouble finding a youtube video of it (still looking). It was either Louis CK or Joe Rogan and probably on the Opie and Anthony Show. But this claim seems to be mentioned on various websites, but it would be great to track down the reliable source of this information.[4] (Found it! Mencia himself admits this in an interview with Marc Maron on his WTF Podcast #75, the original can be retrieved directly from Marc Maron's archive but here is a youtube link: [5]). Btw, the adoption of the Carlos Mencia name happened in 1988. -Hamsterlopithecus (talk) 22:06, 15 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Anyway, let's try to compile everything we can, put together a fair assessment of the situation, and then just report on all the information. Hamsterlopithecus (talk) 22:48, 12 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Owner of Maggie Rita's Restaurant.[edit]

The end of the Career section claims that "Mencia is the co-owner of the restaurant chain Maggie Rita's." According to the wikipedia page for Maggie Rita's Restaurant there has been only one location since 2013 and the single remaining location is under the sole ownership of Tony Shannard. Mencia has not held any stake in the company since 2013. That article also states that Mencia co-founded the chain.

Mencia's article should be changed to reflect that he is the co-founder, rather than the co-owner. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2600:1700:87B0:3A70:8D5E:D9CE:76EE:16C2 (talk) 21:08, 8 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
